IGEPAL CO-430 is a nonionic surfactant used as a defoaming agent in low-foaming detergents and cold-water cleaners. It also functions as a dispersing agent for petroleum oils and as a co-emulsifier in nonionic surfactant blends. It has applications in paper processing, industrial metal cleaning, and textile applications.

INCI Name: Nonoxynol-9

Functions: Anti-Foaming Agent, Co-Emulsifier, Co-Emulsifier, Defoamer, Detergent, Dispersant, Dispersant, Emulsifier, Surfactant, Surfactant (Nonionic)

Applications
  • IGEPAL CO 430 is used as an oil soluble emulsifying agent, as an intermediate in the synthesis of high-foaming water soluble sulfate esters and as an oil detergent and dispersing agent for petroleum oils.
  • IGEPAL CO products do not ionize in water, hence are nonionic and non-electrolytic. Nor are they subject to hydrolysis by aqueous solutions of acid or alkali. They cannot form salts with metal ions and are equally effective in hard and soft waters. Their nonionic nature makes them useful with either anionic or cationic agents, and with positively or negatively charged colloids.
  • The amount of ethylene oxide combined with nonyl phenol determines the solubility of the IGEPAL CO products in water, oil or organic solvent. Greater solubility in water and waterr-miscible solvents is found in the IGEPAL CO products which contain larger amounts of ethylene oxide. The IGEPAL CO products with lower amounts of ethylene oxide are soluble or dispersible in mineral oils and water-immiscible solvents. The types which are soluble in water dissolve to a crystal clear solution.
  • IGEPAL CO products are used in a number of different industries and in a multitude of products including cosmetics, agricultural emulsions, detergents, sanitizers, industrial cleaners, metal cleaners, textiles, paper de-inking and drilling products.

Storage & Handling

Storage & Handling
  • Normal safety precautions (i.e. safety goggles, gloves, etc.) should be employed when handling IGEPAL CO products. Contact with eyes and prolonged contact with skin should be avoided. Wash thoroughly after handling material.
  • It is recommended that IGEPAL CO products be stored in sealed containers and kept in a cool, dry place.
  • Although IGEPAL CO 430 will solidify at low temperature, this change in physical form is reversible and does not affect performance. IGEPAL CO 430 is stable to, and can be used safely with, acid and alkali and dilute solutions of many oxidizing and reducing agents.
  • Bulk Storage Information: IGEPAL CO products can be stored in vessels of 316 stainless steel, but carbon steel is adequate. Material should be stored between 37 - 44 °C. An internal hairpin coil of carbon steel with low pressure steam (under 50 psig) should be used if heating is required. Mild agitation is required if the tank is heated. Material is heat sensitive and agitation prevents localized heating. Heating may not be required for inside storage if the tank is turned over frequently. Stainless steel 316 is preferred for pumps, pipes and transfer lines, however, carbon steel is adequate.
