In combination with aliphatic polyisocyanates for air- and stove-drying two-component coatings
with high mechanical resistance and high resistance to chemicals and weathering.- Properties and Fields of use
SYNTHALAT-A 150 S is used primarily in combination with aliphatic polyisocyanates for airand
stove-drying coatings for metals and plastics. These types of 2-component coatings are
used preferably in instance where high coating qualities are required but where stoving is
impossible due to the size or heat-sensitivity of the object to be coated. Examples are
automotive refinishes, prime coatings for busses and streetcars, object made of plastics, etc.

- Film Properties
In combination with aliphatic polyisocyanates like „Desmodur N“, non-yellowing films are
obtained which have excellent weathering resistance and gloss retention.These types of films
are characterized by high scratch and abrasion resistance combined with a good solvent
resistance. They are also distinguished by good resistance to water and corrosive chemicals.
Because of its higher cross-link density, SYNTHALAT-A 150 S gives paint films have a
significantly higher resistance to abrasion and solvents than those of A 045, 055, 065 and 085.
They are only surpassed by those of A 190.- Pigmentation
SYNTHALAT-A 150 S has a high pigment loading and a very good pigment wetting. All neutral
pigments and fillers are suitable for pigmentation. Basic pigments and pigments containing
soluble metallic compounds may exert a catalytic effect on curing and shorten the pot life of
finished mixed batches.- Catalysis
To accelerate drying, organometallic compounds may be added. Good results have been
obtained with dibutyltin dilaurate in a ratio of 0.3-0.5 % DBTL - 1% in xylene (solid).- Mixing ratio with poly-isocyanates
Assuming equivalent reaction of the reactive groups (NCO:OH = 1:1), the following formula
applies for the calculation of the amount of polyisocyanate to be added (relative to 100 parts by
weight of SYNTHALAT-A 150 S, solid): 42 X 100 X 4.5
17 X NCO %
42 = molecular weight of the NCO group
17 = molecular weight of the OH group
4.5 = hydroxyl content of SYNTHALAT-A 150 S in % relative to non-volatile
components
The best results are obtained with a mixing ratio of 100 parts by weight of SYNTHALAT-A 150
S (form in which supplied) to 40 parts by wt. of „Desmodur N 75%. An overcuring or
undercuring of up to 20% has little influence on film properties.
