Applications & Uses

Application & Uses

Uses:

  • Required over smooth surfaced, mineral surfaced or gravel surfaced coal tar roofing systems, prior to the application of white (or colored) elastomeric roof coatings, to prevent migration of the aromatic oils into the surface coating.
  • Can be used over asphalt BUR and modified bitumen membranes as a stain blocker, preventing compatiblizing oils from staining the surface coating.
  • Improves adhesion over properly cleaned, new or weathered and rusty metal surfaces.

Applications:

  • Ready to apply.
  • Do not heat.
  • Do not thin.
Surface Preparation
  • Coal tar roof systems must weather the equivalent of 30 summer days prior to priming and coating, to ensure optimum stain blocking performance.
  • All work surfaces should be in sound condition, free of dirt, debris, loose and/or embedded gravel, unattached coatings & membranes, biological growth* (mold, mildew and algae) and other contaminants that may interfere with a satisfactory bond.
  • *Use Fortress® QuiKleen™ to eliminate biological growth and remove residual surface oils on coated and uncoated bituminous surfaces.
Application Directions
  • Apply to the properly prepared surface at a rate of 1/2 to 3/4 gallon per square using a medium nap roller or airless spray equipment (a 0.015 - 0.021 inch spray tip orifice and a minimum operating pressure of 500 psi are recommended).
  • Do not puddle or over-apply.
  • Two coats, each applied at 1/2 the total recommended coverage rate and perpendicular to one another are required to ensure optimum performance over coal tar roof systems.
  • Re-coat when the primer has dried and can withstand foot traffic (about 1 - 2 hours).
Application Precautions
  • Do not use on 100% rubber or plastic substrates.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Do not use where this product may come in contact with potable water.
  • Do not thin.
  • Exterior use only.
  • Do not apply if heavy rain or dew is expected or if temperatures are expected to drop below 50°f within 6 hours of application.
Clean Up
  • Immediately rinse/flush equipment and tools with water after use.
  • If the material has cured, clean with mineral spirits, exercising all flammable liquid precautions.
  • Use waterless hand cleaner on the skin.
