Euphrasia officinalis is widely distributed in Alpine pastures throughout the world. Eyebright is used in herbal medicine for eye conditions. It is also used as an astringent and anti-inflammatory agent to reduce skin allergies and itching. Due to these effects, it is used topically for treating acne and skin inflammation. The antioxidant activities of its constituents, such as flavonoids, tannins and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, were carefully examined and antimicrobial of its extracts were demonstrated. Eyebright extract was found to inhibit IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, as well as IL-10 in human cells, confirming its anti-inflammatory activity.

The Secrets of Caledonia Betula | Birch is commonly known as downy birch, European white birch or hairy birch, is a species of deciduous tree, native and abundant throughout northern Europe and northern Asia, growing farther north than any other broadleaf tree. It is closely related to the silver birch but grows in wetter places with heavier soils and poorer drainage. The tree is a pioneer species, readily colonizing cleared land, but later being replaced by taller, more long-lived species. The bark can be stripped off without killing the tree and the bark and the timber is used for turnery and in the manufacture of plywood, furniture, shelves and wood flooring. The inner bark is edible and it was ground up and used in bread-making in times of famine. The rising sap in spring can be used to make refreshing drinks, wines, ales and liqueurs and various parts of the tree have been used in herbal medicine.

Agrimonia eupatoria is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and grown in Scotland as a medicinal herb.Agrimony has been in use for centuries as a healing herb. It was used to treat wounds, skin blemishes and warts. The plant is well known for its use as a raw material for the extraction of medicinal ingredients or production of drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. Agrimony is rich in secondary metabolites, including tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids and triterpenoids and these compounds have been correlated to its anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, hepatoprotective, and properties.

The aerial parts of this plant have a sweet scent and has been traditionally used as an insect repellent, as well as perfume, a condiment with foliage historically being used in royal wedding bouquets. In Scotland it is widely known to be able to ward oﬀ the highland midge. Bog myrtle has astringent and antiseptic properties and was traditionally used in wound healing poultices, as well as treating acne and alleviating digestive problems and itching. There have been recent plans to increase the production of the plant in Scotland for use as an essential oil for treating sensitive skin and acne. The major compounds contained in Angelica extracts are angelicin, caffeic acid and other flavonoids and phytosterols.
