Applications & Uses

Surface Preparation

  • The success of your project is dependent upon the degree ofsurface preparation provided. Surface must be clean and free from dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, concrete curing membranes, and the oily film left by sweeping compounds. Stains on the surface should be removed using a heavy duty detergent until the surface is clean. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry completely. If using a pressure washer, do not use on a pressure setting above 1750 PSI to avoid damaging the concrete. Remember concrete actslike a “stone sponge.” Pressure washing and cleaning in general may trap residual moisture in the concrete.
  • Check for Trapped Moisture: Tape a 12” x 12” piece of 3 mil plastic or aluminum foil tightly on all four edgesto the surface. Remove it after 24 hours. If the floorside of the plastic orfoil is damp allow additional drying and then repeat the test. A dehumidifier orfan may help to eliminate residual trapped moisture. The concrete to be painted should have a slight texture, such asthe look and feel of medium gritsandpaper or a broom finish. A clean, thoroughly dry, broom finished surface isready to paint.Highly troweled or extremely smooth concrete must be acid etched (see below) or mechanically abraded for proper DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint adhesion. New/Unpainted Surfaces,Garage Floors, and Exterior Concrete Surfaces:New concrete must cure for 30 days. For best results new concrete should be washed and scrubbed thoroughly to remove any surface contaminants. Allow to dry completely. Apply to bare concrete. Forsurfaces subjected toHEAVY use, highly troweled, or extremely smooth concrete, referto “Acid Etching”.
  • Acid Etching: Acid etching will dissolve certain mineralsin the top layer of concrete, creating a more poroussurface forimproved penetration. To etch concrete, predampen the entire surface then use DRYLOK® Concrete and Masonry Etch&Cleaner (liquid or powder) according to label directions until the surface hasthe look and feel of 150-gritsandpaper. The acid etching process may be repeated until the desired texture is achieved. Test concrete porosity by sprinkling a few drops of water onto the surface in several areas. If the water is readily absorbed, you are ready to paint. If it beads or lays on the surface additional cleaning and etching is needed. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry for 24 hours. NOTE: Rinse etching solutions thoroughly. Etching solution allowed to dry on the masonry surface will prevent proper penetration and curing of the DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint . Surface must be thoroughly dry. Do not apply to damp surfaces. For exterior surfaces, do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. Wait for a dry, rain-free period. Allresidual acid must be removed from the surface, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry, (see “Check for Trapped Moisture” above) priorto application of the DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint. On areasthat have had efflorescence (saltlike deposit) problems or exposure to excess levels ofsalt compounds, it isrecommended that DRYLOK® Concrete Protector, be applied according to label directions priorto application of the DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint . OldWeathered or Previously Painted Surfaces: Remove peeling paint and clean as above in surface preparation section. Mildew should be removed using a suitable mildew remover. Allow to dry completely.Glossy painted surfaces must be dulled orsanded to improve adhesion. Do not apply to floors previously painted with 2 component epoxy paints/coatings. Do not etch painted surfaces.

Application

  • Stir thoroughly before and during application. Air and surface temperature must be above 50°F-90°F (10°C-32°C) during application and for a minimum of 4 hours after application. Do not thin. Apply an even coat using a 3/8” nap roller or nylon polyester brush. Do not paint in direct sunlight or apply to a hot surface. Provide good ventilation for normal drying. Allow first coat to dry 4 hours prior to applying second coat. High humidity and low temperatures may require longer drying times. The second coat should be applied in a cross direction to the first coat to achieve color uniformity. Do not apply more than 2 coats. When using 2 or more containers of the same color of DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint, mix together to assure color uniformity.
  • NOTE: Painted surfaces may become slippery when wet. If a slip resistant surface is desired add 2-4 oz. (59-118 mL) of DRYLOK® Non-Skid Texture Additive per gallon to DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint.

Important

Floors that are subjected to hydrostatic pressure (water seeping from underneath the floor) or are continually damp cannot be satisfactorily painted with any paint or coating. Moisture on basement floors caused by water seeping through masonry walls or through floor-wall joints or cracks must first be eliminated. Use DRYLOK® Fast Plug®, a quick setting hydraulic cement, to fill floor-wall joints or cracks, and If the basement floor is subjected to hydrostatic pressure use DRYLOK® Floor & Wall Masonry Waterproofer to control water. Then apply DRYLOK® E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint per label directions. In addition, outside work may be required to eliminate water infiltration.
