Applications & Uses

Surface Preparation

  • General Surface Preparation: Surfaces must be thoroughly clean. If using a pressure washer, do not use a setting above 1750 PSI to avoid damaging the concrete. Surface must be thoroughly dry before painting. To verify the surface is thoroughly dry and free of residual trapped moisture, tape a 1 ft. by 1 ft. square piece of plastic onto the surface and let stand for 24 hours. If moisture is present on the concrete side of the plastic, the surface has not dried sufficiently. Allow additional drying and retest. Surface porosity is important for proper product adhesion. Before application, test concrete porosity by sprinkling a few drops of water onto the surface in several areas. If water is readily absorbed, you are ready to paint. If it beads or lays on the surface, additional cleaning and etching is required.
  • NOTE: Multiple cans of the same color should be mixed together for uniformity.

Acid Etching Instructions

Treat with DRYLOK® Concrete and Masonry Etch & Cleaner (liquid or powder) or muriatic acid, according to manufacturer’s directions. Properly prepared concrete should look and feel like medium grit sandpaper. If concrete remains smooth, repeat etching procedure. Surface must be free of all residual etching compounds. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Do not etch painted surfaces.

Application

Interior Bare & Previously Painted Concrete or Wood Application: Stir thoroughly before and during application. Air and surface temperatures must be above 50°F (10°C) during application and remain there for 4 hours after application for proper film formation to occur. Apply first coat by brush (a good quality nylon/polyester blend) or 1/4” (6.35 mm) nap roller. For unpainted surfaces, the first coat should be thinned with one pint of water per gallon of paint. For previously painted surfaces in good condition, apply full strength. Allow 4 hours drying time and apply a second coat. Garage Floors & Exterior Concrete Application: Stir thoroughly before and during application. Air and surface temperatures must be above 50°F (10°C) during application and remain there for 4 hours after application for proper film formation to occur. Thin the first coat with one pint of water per gallon of paint and apply by brush (a good quality nylon/polyester blend) to ensure good adhesion. Allow to dry 4 hours. Apply a second coat full strength by brush or 1/4” (6.35 mm) nap roller.
IMPORTANT On floors (other than garages) that are subjected to hydrostatic pressure (water seeping from underneath the floor) or that are continually damp, apply DRYLOK® Floor & Wall Masonry Waterproofer according to directions then topcoat with DRYLOK® Concrete Floor Paint. Moisture caused by water seeping through floorwall joints or cracks must also be eliminated. Use DRYLOK® Fast Plug®, a fast setting hydraulic cement, to fill floor-wall joints or cracks prior to painting.

Drying

Allow to dry 4 hours before subjecting to light foot traffic and 24 hours before subjecting to heavy foot traffic. Allow 5 days before subjecting to automobile use. When air and surface temperatures are below 50°F (10°C), and/or the relative humidity is above 60%, or if the coating is applied too thick, the drying time may be extended.

Tinting

Additional colors can be achieved with Universal tinting colors. Do not use more than 4 fl. oz. of colorant per gallon in ready-mixed colors or 12 fl. oz. per gallon in the Dark Tint Base. Note: when tinting more than one container, mix containers together to assure color uniformity.

Limitations
  • Must be applied to bare masonry surfaces. However, can be applied over a surface coated with previous coats of DRYLOK® Latex Concrete Floor Paint Interior Bare & Previously Painted Concrete or Wood Preparation: First, read the previous section: “General Surface Preparation”. Surfaces must be thoroughly clean. Remove loose or flaking paint by wire brushing or scraping. Dull glossy, previously painted surfaces with sandpaper. For bare surfaces that are highly troweled or smooth, acid etching is required.
  • Garage Floors & Exterior Concrete Preparation: First, read the previous section: “General Surface Preparation”. Surfaces must be thoroughly clean and all previous coatings must be removed. Previous coats of DRYLOK® Concrete Floor Paint in good condition do not have to be removed. Freshly poured concrete and new concrete must cure 30 days before painting. All surfaces subject to vehicle traffic, highly troweled or extremely smooth concrete, must be acid etched. Refer to “ACID ETCHING INSTRUCTIONS”. Concrete surface profile 4 and above required
