Applications & Uses

Surface Preparation

  • Be sure surface is free of all dirt, mildew stains, loose wood fibers and other foreign matter. To be effective, a stain must be able to penetrate. Surfaces must be sound and may be dry or damp. If damp, the wood should be free of puddles and not feel wet. Prepare previously stained or weathered surfaces with a solution of 1/3 cup heavy-duty laundry detergent to 1 quart household bleach to 3 quarts of warm water or a suitable deck cleaner. On untreated weathered surfaces, it is best to pressure wash (Pressure for soft wood (like cedar or pine) should be at about 500 to 600 pounds per square inch (psi); harder woods may tolerate more pressure, but you should not go higher than 1,200 psi.
  • Use a fan tip with a 40- to 60-degree spread), but at minimum, scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush and rinsing with a garden hose should be done to completely remove all loose wood fibers. Sanding is best to remove any loose sand fibers. Wait 72 hours for lumber that has undergone pressure treatment to dry completely. We expect that the wood from the lumber yard has been kiln dried. Check the board for tags and ask the hardware store staff. If you have a moisture content reader, test multiple spots, ideally it should read 12% to 15% or less. If you find areas that are much higher than this do not apply stain until they have dried out. Without a moisture meter, “The bead test” is a simple way to check if your wood is ready to be sealed. Pour a small amount of water on your deck. If the water beads up, there’s still some moisture in the wood. If the deck absorbs the water, then it’s dry enough to be sealed.

Application

  • Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 40°F (4.4°C) and 90°F (32°C). Avoid applying in direct sunlight. Apply with nylon or polyester brushes, stain pads or professional spray equipment. When spraying, always backbrush immediately. To ensure desired appearance and proper drying time, always finish a small test area before proceeding. Do not over apply. Shake and stir thoroughly before and during use. If project requires more than one container, blend all containers together to ensure uniformity. Apply to small sections at a time (1-3 boards); start at one edge of the board and work end-toend, following through to the end of the boards to avoid lap marks. A one-coat application is recommended.
  • Airless Spray Application: Tip: .015” - .019” Filter: 60 mesh Fluid Pressure: 1,400 – 2,400 psi. Follow spraying immediately with a pad, back-brushing, or back-rolling for a uniform appearance. MAINTENANCE Areas with harsh exposure to sun, weather or foot traffic will show wear more quickly than other surfaces. If this occurs, clean affected areas and recoat as necessary.

Dry Time

  • Dry To Touch: At 77° F and 50% relative humidity 4 hours
  • Full Cure: 24 hours
Note: Drying time will be affected by temperature, humidity and film thickness. On decks, allow to dry 24-48 hours before use.

Coverage

  • 250–400 square feet (23–37 m2) per gallon.
  • Rough surfaces,100–250 (9–23 m2) square feet per gallon. Does not include loss of material if spraying.

Note: Actual coverage will vary depending upon application method, surface texture, and porosity.
