Velsicol is a leading producer and marketer of benzoate plasticizers for various polymer additive applications with our Velsiflex – branded product line. We are also the world market leader in cyclopentadiene chemistry including Hex and Chlorendic Anhydride. This product portfolio serves a wide range of customers and end-use applications in unsaturated polyester resin market as well as the flame retardant, epoxy resins, adhesive, caulk, paint and coating, PVC and plastisol markets.

Velsiflex plasticizers are an environmentally friendly option for formulators looking for an alternative to commodity and specialty phthalate esters. Velsiflex is a non-phthalate plasticizer and uses benzoic acid as a key raw material. It is therefore a more environmentally-friendly product versus traditional commodity phthalates that have been linked to human health issues.

While Velsiflex is not a green plasticizer, it is derived from benzoic acid, which in its salt form, is used as a food preservative in jams, soft drinks, pickled foods and spreads. Velsicol continually looks for opportunities to expand its product line and part of its product line may extend into bio-based plasticizers.

Velsiflex

Velsiflex® 342 is one of the most popular liquid plasticizers. It is a high-solvating plasticizer containing mostly dipropylene glycol dibenzoate. It is used in a wide variety of applications, including caulk, adhesives, resilient flooring, PVC-coated fabrics and artificial-leather cloth. In PVC, it acts as a medium- viscosity high solvator that saves energy and improves process ability. Vinyl applications using Velsiflex 342 have excellent resistance to extraction from solvents and oils. It also works with vinyl to make it UV – light-degradation resistant and stain resistant.

Velsiflex® 342 S is a blend of dipropylene glycol dibenzoate and other benzoate esters. It is a lower moisture / lower hydroxyl plasticizer. It has been widely used in 2K polyurethane systems to reduce cure interface, which also provides better rebound, improved tear strength and reduced swell with solvents. It is also used in many polysulfide sealant applications and has proven to be a very efficient ester from a softening agent perspective.

Velsiflex® 342 S

Velsiflex® 328 is a blend of dipropylene glycol and diethylene glycol dibenzoate in an approximately equal ratio. Velsiflex 328 is primarily known for its exceptional performance in polyvinyl acetate adhesives. It displays excellent wet tack, set times and open time performance. It also improves adhesion to acrylic latex caulks and is a high-solvating PVC plastisol.

Velsicol CHLORENDIC ANHYDRIDE is a solid, reactive flame retardant. An acid anhydride with a chlorine content of 54.5%, it imparts permanent flame retardance, high heat distortion, and excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance to resins such as unsaturated polyesters and alkyds. Chlorendic Anhydride is also used as a cross-linking agent in epoxy resins as a low-smoke component in polyols for rigid polyurethane foams and in UV curable inks and coatings for its adhesion to metal. Resin systems containing Chlorendic Anhydride can be formulated to meet ASTM E84 (Underwriter’s Tunnel Test) UL-94 and ASTM E 162-78 (Surface Flammability Test) as well as to meet U.S. military specifications for flame retardant, corrosion- resistant coatings.Unsaturated polyesters resins made from Chlorendic Anhydride are used in flame-retardant, glass- reinforced polyester composites for boats, construction panels, electrical applications and machine housings. In polyester corrosion-resistant applications, Chlorendic Anhydride is used in piping and in tanks and scrubbers for the chemical, fertilizer and pulp industries.Epoxy resins from Chlorendic Anhydride can be used as laminates for electrical uses, potting and encapsulation, adhesives requiring flame resistance, and high-heat distortion and protective coatings where permanent flame retardance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance are required.Alkyd coatings from Chlorendic Anhydride-based alkyds are used extensively for industrial and marine coatings applications. They are used in approved coating formulas, meeting military specifications Mil-R- 21417 for Navy ships and in industrial environments requiring chemical resistance combined with flame retardance.UV curable ink and coatings from Chlorendic Anhydride are used in polyester-based coatings and inks to provide good adhesion to metal, fast curing and hardness. In heat-fusible polyester and alkyd inks, it provides good adhesion to plastics, flexibility and high gloss.
