Applications & Uses

Application Method
Compatible Substrates & Surfaces
Uses
  • SC-35 is designed to be used as a coloring system for Westcoat’s Texture Crete®, ALX™ & MACoat™ systems and over existing concrete in light foot traffic, residential areas.
  • SC-35 can be used in conjunction with Acid Stain as a highlight color.
Inspection

Substrate must be clean, dry, and free of grease, paint, oil, dust, curing agents, or any foreign material that will prevent proper adhesion.

Moisture
  • All concrete should be tested for moisture before applying a seamless coating.
  • If moisture emissions exceed 5 lbs/1000 square feet/24 hours (ASTM F1869) or if the relative humidity (RH) exceeds 75% (ASTM F2170), contact the manufacturer before application.
Preparation
  • For concrete, the surface should be at least 2500 psi and have cured for a minimum of 28 days.
  • Prepare concrete to a profile equal to CSP 2-3.
  • You may mechanically profile by grinding or shot blasting.
  • The concrete should be porous and be able to absorb water.
  • Prior to starting work, test existing concrete slab for efflorescence, moisture and hydrostatic pressure.
  • Vacuum the surface entirely and ensure that any dust or contaminants are removed.
  • Failure to remove dust or contaminates will prevent stain from adhering properly.
Thinning

Water-Based Stain can be thinned using water, up to equal parts. Thinning will effect the depth of color.

Coverage
  • The coverage will vary depending on the surface and the overall desired look.
  • For applications over Westcoat’s acrylic cements, coverage is approximately 150-600 square feet per gallon.
  • For applications directly over concrete, coverage is approximately 600-1000 square feet per gallon.
  • Product performs best if applied in thin even coats. For best results, filter prior to spraying.
Applying Product
  • Before beginning any project, it is recommended that a mock-up be installed to help indicate the overall look and finish.
  • SC-35 can be applied on dry or slightly damp concrete or over acrylic cements.
  • SC35 can be applied using a variety of methods, depending on the desired look and effect.
  • SC-35 can be applied with: a pump sprayer, airless sprayer, pressure pot, gravity feed HVLP, sponge, brush, cotton rag or broom for application methods.
  • For best results, a pump sprayer with a conical tip can be used to evenly distribute the stain.
  • Straining or filtering the material before pouring into the sprayer, can help avoid clogging.
  • Do not apply when temperatures are below 50F degrees or above 90F degrees.
  • When temperatures are above 80F degrees, it may be necessary to dampen the surface prior to application, to prevent material from drying instantly.
  • This product needs some wet time for the stain to properly penetrate the surface.
  • Multiple colors may be applied at the same time for a variegated finish.
  • Re-coat in ½ to 1 hour at 70F degrees, if needed.
  • Stain is designed to be applied in one to two coats, depending on the overall look.
  • Do not apply this material too thick, as it may affect the semi-transparent look and may prevent from proper penetration and adhesion.
Clean Up
  • Uncured material should be removed with soap and warm water.
  • Cured material should be removed mechanically or with an environmentally-safe solvent.
Limitations
  • This product is designed for professional use only.
  • Be sure to measure and mix properly. Be aware of the pot life of mixed epoxy.
  • Do not apply when temperatures are below 50°F or above 90°F.
  • Hot or cold weather will affect dry times.
  • Epoxy must be cured for a minimum of 24 hours before coming in contact with water.
  • Skid-resistant additives are available, such as CA-30 or CA-31.
  • For interior use only unless protected by a UV-resistant coating.
  • Solvents may be required in cooler weather to lower viscosity and increase coverage of 100% solids.
  • Please check with local laws governing the use of solvents.
  • Do not allow Westcoat products to freeze.
