Westcoat SC-71 High VOC Acrylic Lacquer Sealer

Westcoat SC-71 High VOC Acrylic Lacquer Sealer is a clear, single component, solvenated lacquer sealer and glaze. It is a very hard acrylic polymer that is UV and stain resistant and is designed to protect and beautify concrete substrates. The solvent base can help the material to penetrate and adhere to concrete.

Applications & Uses

Application Method
Compatible Substrates & Surfaces
Uses
  • SC-71 is designed to seal, protect and create a “wet look” on concrete, unglazed brick or tiles and many other masonry surfaces.
  • Perfect to seal and glaze stamped concrete and acrylic cement toppings, such as Westcoat Texture-Crete® or Westcoat’s waterproofing systems with a custom finish.
Inspection
  • Substrate must be clean, dry, and free of grease, paint, oil, dust, curing agents, or any foreign material that will prevent proper adhesion.
  • Over previously coated systems, surface must be structurally sound with no peeling or flaking.
  • Over sheet metal, metal should be bonderized, clean and free of rust.
  • If galvanized metal is used, it must be free of oil and abraded.
Moisture
  • All concrete should be tested for moisture before applying a seamless coating.
  • If moisture emissions exceed 5 lbs/1000 square feet/24 hours (ASTM F1869) or if the relative humidity (RH) exceeds 75% (ASTM F2170), contact the manufacturer before application.
Preparation
  • For concrete, the surface should be at least 2500 psi and have cured for a minimum of 28 days.
  • Prepare concrete to a profile equal to CSP 2-3.
  • You may mechanically profile by grinding or shot blasting.
  • The concrete should be porous and be able to absorb water.
  • Prior to starting work, test existing concrete slab for efflorescence, moisture and hydrostatic pressure.
  • Vacuum surface entirely and ensure that any dust or contaminates are removed, as these will deter adhesion.
  • As a topcoat for ALX™, MACoat™ or Texture-Crete®, apply directly over the textured surface.
  • If texture has been left for more than 72 hours or it has become dirty, clean as needed prior to application of the product.
  • Over previously coated acrylic deck coatings, prepare surface by scrubbing with a nylogrit brush on a floor buffer and follow by powerwashing.
  • A compatibility test should be done.
  • Over sheet metal, the metal should be clean, etched and wire brushed, if needed, to allow product to bond.
  • Remove any mildew or algae using 50/50 water and household bleach.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
Mixing

Stir prior to use.

Thinning
  • The material may be thinned by adding up to a maximum of one quart of water per gallon, for the first coat.
  • For best results, it is not recommended to thin the final coat.
Coverage
  • Will vary depending on the surface.
  • Up to 400 square feet per gallon on a smooth surface and between 200-300 square feet per gallon on a rough surface.
Applying Product
  • Allow the primer or texture to dry completely before applying the product.
  • This product can be sprayed, brushed or rolled.
  • If rolled, neatly cut-in all edges with a brush and roll the center using a 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch nap, good quality roller cover.
  • Be sure to spread evenly in a “V” pattern rolling in both directions.
  • Apply the product thinly using adequate pressure to avoid filling in textured surfaces.
  • In general, the product will perform better if applied in two thin coats.
Dry Time
  • For best results, allow the product 4-6 hours drying time at 70 degrees before permitting light pedestrian traffic or additional coats are applied.
  • Allow 24 hours to cure before heavy traffic is permitted.
  • Allow 48 hours before heavy objects are placed on the surface and allow 72 hours for vehicular traffic.
  • Allow 5 days prior to any abrasion or chemical exposure.
Clean Up
  • Uncured material should be removed with an environmentally-safe solvent.
  • Cured material should be removed mechanically.
Limitations
  • This product is designed for professional use only.
  • Apply in thin coats.
  • Concrete must be free of sealers, wax, or curing agents.
  • Be sure to paper off any areas that you do not want stained.
  • Will not hide imperfections or stains in concrete.
  • Fast stain will stain concrete and can produce a mottled look. Colors and effects will vary.
  • Do not allow any westcoat products to freeze.
  • Read product specification sheets for every product you will be using before beginning the project.
  • Stains are translucent and somewhat transparent.
  • For interior use only.
  • Caution: when mixed with acetone, product is extremely flammable
