Applications & Uses

Application Method
Principal Use

Ideal for use as a primer for steel surfaces that are to be top-coated with lacquers, alkyd enamels, or acrylic modified alkyds.

Application Equipment

Conventional Spray:

  • Apply with industrial equipment, such as DeVilbiss MBC or JGA spray gun with No. 78 or 765 Air cap, E fluid tip and needle, or Binks 2001, 18 or 62 spray gun, and a pressure pot with mechanical agitator.
  • A moisture and oil trap in the main air supply line is required.

Airless Spray:

  • Any standard airless spray equipment, such as Graco Bulldog Hydra- Spray or larger, with a .011 - .017 inch fluid tip is recommended.

Brush or Roller:

  • Not recommended due to its low viscosity and fast drying characteristics.
  • Use in small areas.
  • For best results, use at temperature of 65°F or above.
  • Do not apply when surface or ambient temperature is anticipated to drop below 50°F in 24 hours.
  • Do not apply to damp surfaces, and surface temperature must be 5°F above the dew point for 24 hours to prevent moisture condensation, which might result in water spotting and poor film integrity.
Recommended Thinners
  • Below 80°F: Wilko No.1 Thinner
  • Above 80°F: Wilko No.13 Thinner

Recommended Substrate

Has good adhesion to properly prepared steel, copper, aluminum, and galvanized and stainless steel.

Surface Preparation
  • Surface must be clean and dry, free of oil, grease, wax or other contaminants.
  • The use of chemical cleaning or pretreatment (e.g., phosphatizing) will help improve adhesion and enhance overall properties of coating, and is recommended if no mill scale, heavy rust or loose paint is present and sandblasting or other mechanical ways of cleaning is not feasible.
Application Procedure
  • Stir the primer thoroughly, preferably by mechanical means.
  • Apply full wet film with the cross coat method to insure uniform coverage and film depth.
  • To assure an adequate dry, do not apply when the surface or ambient temperature is anticipated to drop below 50°F in 12 hours.
  • Surface temperature must be at least 5°F above the dew point for 24-36 hours to prevent moisture condensation which might result in water spotting and poor film integrity.
  • Do not apply to wet or damp surfaces or surfaces that are likely to be exposed to excessive moisture before an adequate cure occurs.
  • Refinishing: Remove dirt, oil or other contamination by power washing, then wet sand entire surface using a 320 grit paper or finer.
  • Care must be exercised to avoid cutting deeply into the coating as deep cuts may result in lifting.
  • Rough areas must be feather edged to improve appearance.
  • Apply several coats over the rough areas, allowing each coat to thoroughly dry before applying the next coat.
  • Allow to dry then re-sand to smooth out the surface.
  • Re-prime (seal) the entire area to be recoated, allow a 30 minute dry, then topcoat with the desired color.
  • Check for lifting before applying the primer.
  • Check for adhesion to specific substrates before using this product to replace products like wash primer or pretreatments.
