    Features & Benefits

    Chemistry

These types of resins are based on cycloaliphatic polyesters that will dry in air and in thin film coatings.  Since these polyesters are not aromatic, as are most polyesters, yellowing in the presence of ultra-violet radiation is not a problem.

    Advantages

    Physical Property/Ultra-violet Radiation Color Resistance/Cost

    • The Astrocure oligomer thinned with acrylated monomers can produce coatings that have excellent hardness, have resistance to yellowing with time, and at reduced resin costs.
    • With aromatic formulated epoxy and urethane acrylates, hardness and reduced cost can be achieved.  However, the aromatic nature causes yellowing of the coating with time.  Aliphatic type acrylates weather well, but are expensive and toxic.
    • The cycloaliphatic, fused ring nature of these oligomers allow for low resin shrinkage, excellent resistance to yellowing and coatings made with these oligomers have excellent flexual modulus (hardness).

    Air Drying Properties

Unlike conventional polyesters and acrylates, these cycloaliphatics behave as alkyds.  They will cure in air.

    Surfactant Properties

The cycloaliphatic nature of these oligomers is extremely hydrophobic (oil soluble).  The polyester portion of the oligomer is extremely hydrophilic (water soluble).  This combination allows resins, made from Zircon oligomers, to have surfactant characteristics.  Products based on Zircon oligomers will accept solids and inks without excessive viscosity build-up (excellent pigmentability).  Wood penetration, by these types of resins, seal the wood without bleed back.

    Low Shrinkage and Adhesion

Due to the bulky cycloaliphatic nature of Zircon resins, the specific gravity is much lower than conventional aliphatic or aromatic resin.  The bulky nature prevents polymer packing resulting in lower shrink values.  These properties allow coatings made with Zircon resin to have excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates.

    Chemical and Aqueous Resistance

Due to the extreme hydrophobic nature of cure coatings made with Zircon U.V. cured resins, said coatings have excellent resistance to a wide variety of chemical and aqueous environments.
