"Located on the shore of Seneca Lake in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region, US Salt has been in operation since 1893. The refinery sits atop a rich underground supply of salt. Water needed for the plant’s operations comes from Seneca Lake, a 40-mile long body of fresh water. Salt was first discovered in Watkins Glen in 1882. During that year the Watkins Oil Well Company was organized to drill for petroleum, gas, salt and other minerals. The company drilled a well on the hillside west of Watkins Glen, on the site of a spring which the Indians knew had medicinal properties. In September 1882 the Watkins Oil Well Company reported that, at 1,513 feet below the surface, it had reached a sufficient flow of brine to make salt. By 1890, the first brine-producing well was put into service. Impurities in the brine made it difficult to dry the salt. The first real producer of salt in Schuyler County, N.Y., was the Glen Salt Company. It drilled wells on property at Watkins Glen, now owned by US Salt. The Glen Salt Company drilled its first well in 1893, struck salt at 1,841 feet, and stopped drilling at 1,902 feet without reaching the bottom of the salt bed. In 1894 a second well was dug without hitting the bottom of the salt bed. By 1896 a third well was dug that stopped at 1,927 feet, still in solid salt. US Salt holds a reputation as a safe, environmentally-conscious businesses – as well as good neighbor – in the communities serve. Thank you for trusting your business with ours."

The marine mud is always mined during the winter, to conserve and protect the external environment as well as possible. Respecting the environment will be a primary concern of Manicouagan Sea Minerals, with a view to sustainable development. The thick layer of peat is placed aside to enable cleaner extraction of the clay mud. Once extraction is complete, the layer of peat is put back in place, such that the mining process leaves ‘zero footprint’. It is important to note that the machinery used for the mining is washed and sterilized beforehand. Any chemical lubrication in the hydraulic components is also removed and replaced with vegetable oils. The Manicouagan Sea Minerals Company carries the Manicouagan-Uapishka Biosphere Reserve’s seal of approval for its quality as an environmentally responsible business. For its transformation from a traditional small-scale factory to a top-of-the-line factory in 2010, Manicouagan Sea Minerals invested in a 6,400 square-foot factory. This factory has various processing stations separated by positive air pressure systems to prevent product contamination. Each refining point has its own assigned room; that is, there is a specific room to refine and produce mud and another to refine and produce powders (from sun-dried mud in the greenhouses). It should be specified that the products are not processed, but rather refined in accordance with various regulations and with the specific requirements of the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and healthcare sectors. A laboratory containing an SAS is also equipped for the outsourced sterilization and production of clay-based products, such as the Manicouagan Sea Minerals brand, which is distributed in over 37 countries. Manicouagan Sea Minerals takes the greatest care to maintain high quality and to ensure the absence of external contamination.

    ABOUT LANOLIN

Lanolin is the name given to refined Wool grease, which is also known as Wool Wax, Wool Fat and Adeps Lanae. Wool grease is a natural wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep covering the wool fibres. It naturally protects the sheep’s skin and wool from environmental conditions, waterproofing the fibres and avoiding moisture accumulation. After rigorous refining processes, lanolin is obtained: a yellow unctuous product, solid at room temperature with a faint characteristic odor. To avoid confusion, the refined, waterless substance is referred to as ‘Anhydrous Lanolin’. In the pharmaceutical industry, however, ‘Lanolin’ is traditionally describes as water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion, with a water content of approximately 30 % by weight.

    APPLICATIONS

Lanolin is versatile and widely used in pharmaceutical, personal care and industrial products. Lanolin is an excellent emollient, possessing a number of important chemical and physical similarities to human Stratum Corneum Lipids. It has strong emulsifying properties, making it an important ingredient in formulations.

It is commonly used in a diversity of Creams including Breast Creams, Baby Creams, Lotions, Ointments, Plasters, Shampoos, Hair Conditioners and other cosmetic products. Industrial applications include Leather Finishing, Rust Prevention, Plasticisers, Lubricants, Adhesives and Textiles. Pharmaceutical applications include Cholesterol and Vitamin D3.

"In 1891, Heinrich Grau and August Locher founded the chemical factory ""Grau und Locher"", initially in rented rooms in Schwäbisch Gmünd. As early as 1897, today's factory was built on our own property in Bismarckstraße. Mainly chemical-technical products were manufactured like leather fat, shoe polish, floor wax, soap powder, insect powder. After the First World War and the difficult years of inflation, the company was continued by Waldemar and Leonhard Grau and the company name changed to ""Gebrüder Grau u. Co."". In addition to the chemical-technical products, some cosmetic items have already been included in the range. In 1946, immediately after World War II, the company launched the first German bubble bath. In 1958, the third generation, Heinz Grau, took over the management of the company. As a chemist, Heinz Grau soon recognized that the market opportunities in the area of raw material production are much better than in the area of finished products. Emulsifiers for perfumery and cosmetics were developed, followed by plant extracts and active ingredients. The production of fragrances and perfume specialties as well as aroma chemicals began as early as the 1950s. In 1979 the company was renamed ""Grau Aromatics GmbH & Co. KG"". This reflects the importance of aroma chemicals for the aroma and perfumery industry. In January 2003, Heinz Grau's nephew, Markus Grimminger, began working as a shareholder and managing director of the company after studying at the University of Karlsruhe. GRAU AROMATICS accepts the challenge of the future and recommends itself as a reliable supplier to the perfumery, aroma, cosmetics, soap and detergent industry. A worldwide network of representatives is available to our customers for an excellent service in order to meet the demands of the market. GRAU AROMATICS is well prepared for the future through creativity, innovation, modern equipment, first-class analysis, high flexibility and good service for the benefit of our customers."
