Dakota Gasification Company, owns and operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant. The Synfuels Plant is the only commercial-scale coal gasification plant in the United States that manufactures natural gas. It is also the cleanest energy plant operating in the state of North Dakota, according to a comparison of emissions data available from the North Dakota Department of Health. Liquid nitrogen, krypton and xenon gasses are captured in the air separation process used at the facility. These gas products move into various markets and have several different transportation methods. Liquid nitrogen is used for various processes and applications such as refrigerant, prevention of igniting flammable gasses and oil drilling activities. Krypton and xenon gasses are used in windows, lighting and lasers. Dakota Gas sends carbon dioxide through a 205-mile pipeline to Canada for use in enhanced oil recovery. Synthetic natural gas, in a cleaned form, is used for feedstock of other Dakota Gas products and also is sold on the publicly traded natural gas market.
