Benefits

Dextrose (C6H12O6), is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for several reasons.

  • Binder - Dextrose is used as a binder to formulations providing cohesiveness to dry powders enabling creation of tablet.
  • Nutrient - as an excipient, dextrose may be dissolved and provided to patient that require additional calories for energy for example in dialysis treatment or parenteral malnutrition.
  • Carrier - Dextrose can also be used as a medium for other injectable medicines.

As with many saccharides, Dextrose can be produced in two stereo-isomers. However only D-glucose is naturally occurring and can be metabolized. The mirror image of the molecule, L-glucose, cannot be metabolized by cells in process known as glycolysis.
