Scenedesmus contains a significant amount of chlorophyll a and b, pigments produced by photosynthesis, and carotenoids. This microalgae carries many molecules of interest:
- It is very rich in lutein
- It has a high concentration of lipids and sterols, and more specifically interesting levels of sterols Δ5 and Δ7, phytols (BHT, BHA)
- It is very rich in proteins: the dry matter of scenedesmus comprises 55 to 60% of proteins, that is to say an amount as large as that present in spirulina which is already used as a food supplement for its protein richness.
- It is rich in vitamins B1, B2, B7, B9, B12, C
- It contains polyphenols and flavonoids (quercitrin and rutin)

AlgoSource has had its own strain of Scenedesmus obliquus for nearly two decades, also called “desert microalgae” because of its origin in the Sahel. This strain is stored and kept dormant in a nonaxenic unialgal manner, in a freshwater culture medium, in a volume of 10 ml to 50 ml. Year after year, thanks to a culture-conservation method, AlgoSource proceeds to a gentle selection of its strain to optimize the qualities of resistance and production of its molecules of interest. On this basis is prepared an inoculum of scenedesmus which will then inoculate protected basins under greenhouses, raceway type, mechanically agitated by paddle wheels. The cultivation of scenedesmus takes place from September to April. Water quality is an essential criterion in order to ensure the production of healthy and highly qualitative biomass. Each culture step is validated by microscopic control. The scenedesmus harvest is carried out by mechanical means without any chemical additives. At the end of the culture, a first filtration step is carried out on a 300 μm sieve in order to remove any impurities. The harvest is then ensured by centrifugation which allows to obtain a wet paste which will be used as raw material for the concentrated extracts of AlgoSource.

- From this biomass, AlgoSource performs an extraction without fermentation or additives of the molecules of interest, making it possible to obtain water-soluble constituents. The scenedesmus extract, the concentration of which varies according to the needs of the customers, is finally cold stabilized thanks to a sterilizing microfiltration process. It offers AlgoSource customers access to a 100% natural ingredient with very high added value.
- Among the major cosmetic benefits of this microalgae include hydration, protection against UV, cell energization, anti-tyrosinase activity, reduction of melanin synthesis or even acne prevention. .
