BioCell Collagen® CG is a cosmetic-grade, hydrolyzed chicken sternal cartilage extract. It is composed of a complex matrix of primarily collagen type II peptides, chondroitin sulfate (CS) and hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen, CS, and HA are essential structural components in the skin dermis and are responsible for the skin's moisture, suppleness, elasticity, and beauty. Collagen may slow the degradation of these molecules as we age. It can slow the disarray or collapse of the dermal matrix structure, reducing dermal dehydration and aging skin appearances such as fine lines, wrinkles, and superficial sagging.

1. Toxicology and allergenicity studies Our early studies showed that BioCell Collagen CG-WS was hypoallergenic on the human skin and did not have cytotoxicity on the cells tested.

2. Hyaluronidase inhibition study

What is unique with BioCell Collagen is its inhibitory activity of hyaluronidase. HA is present in virtually all tissues and bodily fluids while one third of HA is turned over daily by coordinated action of HA synthases and hyaluronidases. Our study showed that hyaluronidase was specifically inhibited by BioCell Collagen in a dose-dependent fashion.

Given that hyaluronidase-mediated degradation of HA is implicated in various aging-associated physiological conditions, BioCell Collagen’s property of inhibiting hyaluronidase may have a profound implication especially in terms of aging processes which takes place in the joint and the skin. This data suggested that BioCell Collagen had multiple biological properties in addition to replenishment of structural loss of collagen and HA in aging skin that can be harnessed to maintain the integrity and amount of HA for younger-looking skin.
