BIOLAY 500 is a specialized powder designed for grease barrier coating formulations. It's composed of a mixture of polysaccharides, making it a plant-based and environmentally friendly choice. One of its notable features is that it's entirely free from fluorine and doesn't generate microplastics, aligning with sustainable and safety standards. You can easily apply aqueous solutions of BIOLAY 500 to paper and cardboard, making it an ideal choice for creating effective grease barriers in these materials. Unlike BIOLAY 100, BIOLAY 500 has been optimized for exceptional oil repellency, making it a preferred option for applications where this property is crucial. It's important to note that solutions of BIOLAY 500 may have higher viscosities compared to BIOLAY 100, even at the same solids content.

Recommendation for Use

Preparing aqueous solutions of BIOLAY 500

BIOLAY 500 is water soluble and solutions of up to 20 % can be easily prepared. However, the following requirements need to be met:

  • First, place the water in the respective vessel and subsequently add the appropriate amount of BIOLAY 500. The slower the addition of the powder the easier it can be dissolved. We recommend to use soft water, otherwise precipitations can occur.
  • Vigorous stirring or a make-down unit substantially facilitate the dissolving process.
  • Higher temperatures (maximum 60 °C) accelerate the dissolving process and reduce the viscosity.

Appearance of aqueous solutions

The aqueous solutions of BIOLAY 500 have an amber color. This color originiates from insoluble constituents of the natural raw material. They cannot be removed during the production process of the powder product. These insoluble constituents precipitate over time, especially in low viscosity solutions (<5 %).

Stability of aqueous solutions

BIOLAY 500 does not contain any preservatives. While the powder product is stable for 12 months under dry storing conditions, the aqueous solutions have a limited shelf life.
If the aqueous solutions need to be stored for longer periods, we recommend the use of preservatives.

Formulation recommendations

The solutions of BIOLAY 500 are compatible with hydrophobic additives such as synthetic (e. g. AKD) or natural waxes (e. g. CHT-COAT WAX E-7007). We recommend the addition of wax additives for reducing the COBB value. As a rule of thumb from 5 to 15 % of wax can be added to the BIOLAY solution.

Application Technique

Application Fields

The aqueous solutions of BIOLAY 500 can be applied with all standard coating equipments such as film press, size press, blade coater or curtain coater. Depending on the application method and the required viscosity, we recommend to prepare the following solutions:

  • Brookfield viscosity <50 mPas            (RT, 100 rpm):  5 % solution
  • Brookfield viscosity max. 300 mPas   (RT, 100 rpm):  10 % solution

Stabilities

BIOLAY 500 is stable under standard coating formulation pH values (pH 5 – 8). Extremely low (pH <3) and high pH values (pH >10) lead to decomposition of the product.
