Thixcin® R PC is a non-hygroscopic derivative of castor oil that imparts a high degree of thixotropic thickening in cosmetics mineral, vegetable and silicones oils, as well as low-polarity aliphatic solvents. Thixcin® R PC provides thixotropy and imparts good pay-off in stick products; improves product stability when used in the oil phase of emulsions, and can be used as a binder in pressed powder formulations.

Formulation Guidelines

Thixcin® R PC should be added to the emulsion's oil phase or, in non-emulsion-based formulations, at the beginning of the dispersion process, preferably by pre-mixing the solvent or oil for 5 minutes before other components are added.

Thixcin® R PC should be subjected to as much shear as possible during processing to develop its full properties. However, when using Thixcin® R PC, an incorporation temperature range of 55-65°C must be observed; below 55°C, thixotropy will not develop; above 65°C, soft gel-like particles may appear on cooling the formulation. The presence of higherpolarity oils and solvents will lower this upper temperature limit. To avoid the particles forming, continuous stirring should be maintained until the product has cooled to below 45°C.

Incorporation of Thixcin® R PC into dry systems is by normal powder blending techniques.

Suggested Use Levels
  • Typical addition levels are 0.2 to 0.8 % Thixcin® R PC by weight of the system (or oil phase in emulsions), depending upon the rheological properties required.
  • In pressed powders, tablets and granules 0.5 to 2.0 % should provide adequate binding.
