Traditional use:
The fruits of Schisandra sphenanthera are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treatchronic coughing, frequent urination, diarrhea, diabetes and insomnia [2]. Studies alsoshow that the extract has anti-inflammatory and photoprotective properties [3].In food supplements:
According to our current knowledge, only the variety Chinensis is not a novel food in foodsupplements. We are not aware of any use of the variety Sphenanthera in the EU before15.05.1997. Therefore we recommend the use of the extract in the EU only for cosmeticproducts.
In cosmetics:
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, Schisandra sphenanthera extract is suitable incosmetic products for sensitive and stressed skin. Due to its photoprotective effect it mayalso be used in sunscreens and after sun products [3].
