It all began on the Vetter family farm near Marquette, Nebraska in 1953. That is when Don Vetter, questioning the science and ethics of the agricultural practices of the day, began to adopt organic farming methods. Don’s son David returned to the farm in 1975 after earning a Bachelor’s Degree in agronomy/soil science from the University of Nebraska, and a Master of Divinity Degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. For David, organic, sustainable farming methods became an application of both biological and theological principles. The Vetters were true pioneers, being among the first in the region to take the organic challenge. Their courage and perseverance paid off; the farm was certified organic in 1978, and became The Grain Place, Inc. in 1979.

Grain Place Foods Organic Hulled Barley has only the outer husk removed, and is thus more nutritious than pearled barley, which has husk, bran and germ removed. Barley has a rich, nutlike flavor and chewy consistency that makes it a great addition to soups and stews. It can also serve as a side dish alone or mixed with other grains or as an addition to salads. For a soft texture try adding 4 cups water to 1 cup barley, for a firmer quality use less water.

Organic Kamut Khorasan Wheat Flour has a rich, buttery taste and is easier to digest than common wheat varieties. Kamut® Khorasan wheat flour may be used as a wheat flour alternative. Especially good for making pasta and pizza crust, also a great addition to your favorite pancake mix.

Grain Place Foods Organic Long Grain Brown Rice is categorized is by size: short grain has the highest starch content and makes the stickiest rice, whereas long grain is lighter and tends to remain separate when cooked. Medium grain rice falls between the other two types. All brown rice varieties are whole grains, with only the inedible outer hull removed – but none of the many nutrients. Use as a tasty side dish (e.g. pilaf), in casseroles and soups, and in rice pudding.

Organic Kamut Khorasan Wheat is two to three times the size of common wheat, similar in texture to common wheat, but contains 20-40% more protein and a more digestible form of gluten.
