Gryphin Co. G-249 Epoxy Primer

G-249 Epoxy Primer was developed specifically as a preparatory coating for a variety of surfaces including aluminum, steel, concrete, wood and polyester. It is an excellent priming coat for Gryphin DURADECK Non-Skid deck-covering compounds. G-249 Epoxy Primer is a two-part material containing a synthetic resinous binder and an accelerator or curing agent.

    Advantages
    1. Can be applied at any time the surface can conveniently be cleaned.
    2. On metal surfaces they prevent corrosion, especially G-250 Chelating Primer.
    3. On all surfaces they protect the prepared surface until the top Gryphin Non-Skid Coating can be applied.

The Primers and Non-Skids are used as a system.

    Surface Preparation

As with any coating application, the better the preparation, the better the results. Prior to coating application, the surface must be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, and other contaminants. Recommended for steel: 3 mil profile or near-white metal. The procedure to be followed in surface preparation is as follows:

    • Clear the area to be cleaned of all loose equipment and roiling stock
    • Rope off an area of convenient size for cleaning and priming
    • Post "Keep Off' and "No Smoking" signs
    • For metal surfaces -
      • Clean the area with a Tenant Machine followed by sanding with disk or drum sander
      • Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air
      • Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249
    • For wood surfaces
      • Clean the area with a Tenant Machine followed by sanding with disk or drum sander
      • Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air
      • Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249
    • For concrete surfaces -
      • Sandblast with dry, grease-free sand
      • If sandblasting is not possible, clean with Tenant Machine followed by disk sander, drum sander and wire brushes
      • Remove all dust with dry oil-free compressed air
      • Coat the surface with Gryphin G-249
    Mixing Instructions

    The following procedure is recommended:

    1. If Gryphin Primer is stored in the sun, it is recommended it be placed under cover for 24 hours is before mixing. This will lower the temperature of the material and ensure the longest possible working life when mixed.
    2. The entire G-249 Epoxy kit should be mixed at once. Any attempt to mix less than the entire kit will result in incorrect proportions of accelerator to base material, which will result in improper curing. Gryphin G-250 Chelating Primer is a one part coating.
    3. Mix thoroughly using power mixer. Scrape sides and bottom of container to ensure complete mixing. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes of mixing will be required.
    Application
    • Primers should be applied by roller, brush or spray gun. For roller applications, a conventional paint roller with a medium pile depth is recommended. Mineral spirits is recommended for clean-up operations.
    • The coverage will be approximately 175 sq. ft. per gallon. In case more than 48 hours have elapsed before application of Gryphin Non-Skid, check the surface for contamination by air-bome dirt.
    • If surface contamination is minimal, clean with Methyl Ethyl Ketone. If contamination is severe, re-blast and apply a new coat of primer. Under no circumstances should a mist coat or tie coat be attempted as a substitute for the above procedures.

    Curing Time

The ambient temperature and the temperature of the deck surface influence curing rate. The following table gives reasonable guidelines:

    Temperature Curing Time
    70° F 24 hours
    70° F 72 hours

When surface and air temperatures are above 70oF, the G-249 Epoxy Primer will cure at a faster rate. When surface and air temperatures are below 50oF, external heat is required. Under these conditions it is recommended that the supplier be contacted for technical assistance. It should be remembered, however, that with lower air temperature than 50oF, a surface temperature might approach 80oF under hot sun. Such a condition is suitable for the application of the primer.

    Regulatory & Compliance

    Compliance

G-249 Primerdo not contain lead or chromate pigments and meet the requirements of MIL-P-53022B and MIL-P-24441/1 Formula 150 primer specifications.

G-249 Epoxy Primer is available in 2 gallon and 5 gallon two component kits.

    Storage & Handling

    Working Life (Pot Life)

Gryphin Primers, when stored in tightly sealed containers, have a storage life in excess of one year. Working life is the time during which the mixed G-249 Epoxy Primer can remain in the container at a specified temperature and still remain in usable condition. Mixed G-249 Epoxy Primer has a working life of 2 hours at 70°F. If the lid of the container is left off for a prolonged period of time, there will be a loss of solvent resulting in an increase in the viscosity of the material; this should be avoided.
