Non-metallic honeycombs are manufactured from high temperature resistant aramid paper formed into a honeycomb structure, and coated with a phenolic resin. The combination of aramid paper and phenolic resin gives types A1 and A10 their superior strength, toughness and chemical resistance. The honeycomb cell shape is normally hexagonal for optimum mechanical properties. It can also be overexpanded to produce a rectangular cell shape and provide improved drapeability for the production of curved parts.

HexWeb® HRH-310 is manufactured from aramid fiber sheets. A thermosetting adhesive is used to bond these sheets at the nodes, and after expanding to the hexagonal configuration, the block is dipped in polyimide resin. After curing the resin, slices are cut to the desired thickness.

HexWeb® Honeycomb Cross Reference Guide has been produced to explain the nomenclature in current use for HexWeb® Aluminum and Aramid Paper honeycomb manufactured in Duxford and Casa Grande.

Hexcel manufactures two types of nonmetallic HexWeb® Flex-Core® : HexWeb® HRP® – Fiberglass cloth reinforced with a high temperature phenolic resin. This product provides good retention of strength for temperatures up 350°F. HexWeb® HRH-10® – NOMEX® aramid paper reinforced with a high temperature phenolic resin. This product provides good retention of strength for temperatures up to 300°F.

HexWeb® HRH-36 is manufactured using Kevlar ® paper. The standard resin system is phenolic. Alternate resin systems may be available upon request.

HexWeb® HRH-10 is manufactured from aramid fiber sheets. A thermosetting adhesive is used to bond these sheets at the nodes, and, after expanding to the hexagonal or OX-Core® configuration, the block is dipped in phenolic resin. After curing the resin, slices are cut to the desired thickness. Using this process, a wide range of cell sizes, thicknesses, and densities can be produced.

HexWeb® HRH-49 is manufactured from KEVLAR® 49 fabric. A thermosetting adhesive is used for the node bonds and a 350°F cure modified epoxy resin is applied for initial and final impregnations. Due to the low resin content of HexWeb® HRH-49, core movement may occur during handling and part curing if proper restraining techniques are not employed.
