Take it Slow: Fall Asleep and Sleep Better
- This herbaceous perennial plant, a member of the Valerianaceae family, is native to Europe and Asia.
- It has been used since the time of early Greece and Rome for medical purposes to treat nervousness, trembling, heart palpitations and headache.
- Its pharmacological effects have been associated with the constituents of volatile oils, monoterpens, valeropotriates and sesquiterpens. Among them, the valerenic acid inhibits enzyme-induced breakdown of GABA (Y-amino butyric acid) in the brain leading to sedation.
- Indeed, valerian is taken orally in order to treat insomnia, anxiety, restlessness and mood disorders (e.g depression). It is characterized by anxiolytic, tranquilizing and sleep-inducing effects that have been highlighted in animal and clinical studies.
