Ylang Ylang essential oil is a highly sought after product. It is only produced in a very restricted region of the planet. The flowers of the Ylang Ylang tree are harvested every morning by local women and then distilled on the same day for a period of 24 hours. The distillation time for the essential oil of Ylang-Ylang lasts approximately 24 hours. Several grades are extracted throughout this process: grades Max 1,2 and 3 which are obtained in this order due to a difference in density of the aromatic essence of the flowers. In aromatherapy, the combination of these grades creates Ylang Complete. The vegetal oil of Tamanu (calophyllum inophyllum) is one of our favorite products at Malagassi. Besides being an incredible insect repellent, a great moisturizing body lotion and a natural powerful sunscreen, the social and ecological aspects of this plant are truly amazing. Our trees of Calophyllus are growing on a very long (8km) and thin strip of land located between the Indian Ocean and the Laguna of Loharano. The high density of these trees creates a natural barrier thereby protecting the whole laguna ecosystem from the strong salty wind and water coming from the Ocean. Without these trees this area would be destroyed and eaten completely by the ocean. Katrafay is a medium size tree (max 15m) endemic from Madagascar. It grows in the dry and dense forests of the south west region of the country. Its essential oil is produced after distillation of the bark. As for the Katrafay essential oil we use non-destructive harvesting methods which consist in peeling-off the bark on one side of the tree that allows a full recovery. Using this method protects the ecosystem while producing a better quality of essential oil (the bigger the tree the better the essential oil). The yield of Katrafay is very low (0.4%-0.6%).
