Applications & Uses

Compatible Substrates & Surfaces
Usage
  • As a sealer for most Miracote cementitious products.
  • Excellent finish coat for MiraGard Colorbond XL
  • Natural and pigmented concrete surfaces.
  • Exposed aggregate concrete.
  • Stamped full depth concrete and overlays.
  • Natural and cast stone, slate, and flagstone.
  • Colored and natural gray concrete pavers.
  • Brick and other masonry surfaces.
  • Unglazed tile and stucco.
Installation Steps
  • Surface Preparation - All surfaces must be clean, sound, dry and free from any bond inhibiting substances including, but not limited to, grease, oil and any other contaminants or loosely adhered materials. For concrete substrates, a minimum concrete surface profile of CSP-1 to CSP-3 is required depending on overall substrate and application conditions, and coating or sealing requirements. At the time of application, minimum and maximum substrate temperatures must be 50°F (10°C) and 90°F (32.2°C), respectively. Temperatures outside these limits may negatively affect film formation, and lead to other application issues detrimental to performance and esthetics. When pressure-washing concrete always allow the substrate to thoroughly dry prior to application which will minimize the potential for white blushing that can occur if water-based acrylics are applied to still damp substrates. When in doubt, a plastic sheet test can be performed to verify the presence of latent substrate moisture.
  • Mixing - Prior to use, gently stir or agitate MiraGard HDWB to ensure any settlement of solids are brought back into suspension with the solvent vehicle. Mechanical mixing is not required, but if mixed in this manner do so at a very low speed to avoid air entrainment.
  • Application - Using spray equipment: Hand-held pump-up sprayers or battery-operated, such as an SMK sprayer for maximum production, may be used. Apply one to two thin even coats depending on substrate porosity, performance, and service conditions. The application of two coats is recommended and will always provide the best results. Do not over-apply or allow to puddle onto the surface. Using Brushes/Rollers: Apply MiraGard HDWB in a continuous uniform film using conventional short nap 3/16”-1/4” high quality roller covers, lambswool applicators, or by natural bristle brush.
For Best Results
  • Always install a minimum 4’ by 4’ test area or job site mock-up for owner approval of acceptable color, texture, finish, adhesion, and any other critical requirement prior to proceeding.
  • Always protect materials from excessive heat and cold, and precondition to room temperature, as necessary.
  • Regularly check wet film thickness with a mil gage and monitor consumption to ensure correct application rates are obtained.
  • The proper application of this product is the sole responsibility of the end user. Job site visits by Miracote representatives are only for observation and making recommendations, and do not assume any liability for supervision or quality control.
  • It is recommended to apply in two coats at the published coverage rates. Do not apply in one thick coat or hazing may occur.
  • When a matte finish is desired, apply the first coat in gloss followed by a second coat in matte.
  • When pigmenting MiraGard HDWB always test to verify correct dosage rate to achieve desired degree of opacity or translucency.
  • Measure substrate temperatures to ensure that material is applied when temperatures are between 50°F (4.5°C) and 90°F (32.2°C) during placement.

Technical Details & Test Data

Coverage Rates
  • Smooth surface:350 - 400 sf./gal.
  • Rough/Porous surface:300 - 320 sf./gal

Actual consumption rates are dependent on many factors including, but not limited to, substrate texture and porosity, variations in applied thickness and normal allowance for waste.

Mix Ratio

Single component – Stir, mix or agitate before use.

Limitations
  • Must be applied to clean, dry substrates to avoid white blushing.
  • Must be applied over properly prepared substrates only.
  • Avoid application if rain is expected within 24 hours or if there is a potential for heavy mist conditions.
  • Exterior exposure life is less than interior exposure life.
  • Excellent hot tire resistance is achieved after seven days from initial application. Avoid exposure to parked vehicles when tires are hot from being on the road. Allow hot tires to sufficiently cool down if parking is necessary.
