Product Application

Concrete, as the most commonly used manmade material on earth, has become an essential component in residential and commercial construction with uses ranging from structural applications to floors, driveways, paving stones, and patios.

Preparing Concrete

Substrate must be thoroughly prepared prior to application of the PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS. First, concrete must be cured for a minimum of 28 days. Recommended prep for concrete is shot blasting or grinding. Ensure all previous coatings, oil, grease, curing compounds, form release chemicals and any other contaminants are removed for successful adhesion of the PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS. This may require proper detergents.

Standards for cleaning concrete are available in SSPC (Society for Protective Coatings) SP-13. Use of a hand-held grinder will be required along the edges of walls and other objects to ensure successful penetration of the floor system on the entire floor surface. For a durable and beautiful floor, proper floor prep is time well-spent and crucial in achieving a long-lasting floor.

Repair

As with any floor system, concrete must be structurally sound to achieve the desired results with the PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS. If repair is not possible, alternative solutions will need to be used as damaged concrete would be unsuitable for this system.

If the floor is sound with no spalling, all cracks, pits, floor seams and other imperfections must be properly repaired with the use of our PRECIDIUM™ 2100. Follow the mixing and application instructions on the product’s technical data sheet. All repairs must be smooth and level to achieve an optimum finish. Use of decorative cast coats or our PUD Accents will also provide some hiding of imperfections but always consider that a finished floor will only be as flawless as the repair of the substrate.

The use of other concrete repair products in combination with the PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS is subject to written approval from Quantum Chemical. We have created products that work as a layered floor system and are designed to work together. Combining other products may result in immediate or future issues or failure of the floor, voiding Quantum Chemical’s defective product warranty.

Proper floor repair is critical in achieving a beautiful, flawless floor.

Prime

There are some options for priming concrete when using the PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS.

When the floor will NOT be subjected to strong solvents and chemicals, the PRECIDIUM™ 2200 Primer applied at ~2-3 mils is a good option that can increase the impact resistance of the floor.

When chemical resistance is required, the use of a 2-3 mil application of the PRECIDIUM™ 1150D Clear, thinned with 10% Xylene for better penetration into the concrete is the best option. Once the primer is tack-free (1-3 hours), the color base coat of PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS would be applied.

If neither a shot blaster or diamond grinder is used to prepare the concrete, Quantum Chemical’s PRECIDIUM™ P-180D Primer may be an option but must be discussed with Quantum Chemical first to determine suitability. Use of any other primer products would require prior written approval from Quantum Chemical.

Color Base Coat

The PRECIDIUM™ 1150D tinted according to your color selection would be applied at ~7 mils. If decorative splash accents or broadcast media will not be used, the color coat may be applied up to 10 mils.

For splash accents allow the 7 mil coat to cure until tack free (1 to 3 hours depending on temperature and humidity).

For broadcast media follow the application instructions below.

PRECIDIUM™ PUD Accent Colors

The PRECIDIUM™ PUD ACCENT COLORS are a one-component system with an unlimited pot life. This is advantageous because excess materials can be returned to the containers and used on additional projects. The finish varies depending on the number of colors used, density, size, application technique, etc. Contact Quantum Chemical for the specific training required in the application and equipment of this accent system.

For accent colors the first accent is applied once the surface is tack free. Due to the relatively short cure time of the splash accents, additional accent colors can be applied within 10-30 minutes. One to three accents are typically applied. Patterns as per below can also be created for a dynamic finished floor. Once all accent coats are cured, a clear top coat is applied with the desired level of non-slip additive. Detailed information is provided on the product technical data sheet.

Broadcast Media

The PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS with broadcast media is also a popular finish with varied color selections and depending on the thickness of the final protective clear coat, a slip-resistance of its own. Though not as durable as splash accents, they can provide the advantage of better hiding for surface imperfections.

When using color chips/quartz a color coat of PRECIDIUM™ 1150D RFS is applied at 5-7 mils. Immediately apply color chips or quartz and allow the surface to cure ~3-4 hours. Remove excess chips/aggregate with a stiff brush. Apply a clear top coat thick enough to ensure chips are fully sealed to avoid areas of weakness and possible future delamination.
