DEK-Guard™ DEK-641 Penetrating Primer

1 of 2 products in this brand
DEK-Guard™ DEK-641 Penetrating Primer is a reactive, acrylic resin primer based on methyl methacrylate (MMA). The product exhibits high strength, low viscosity, and the ability to penetrate and reinforce concrete substrates. DEK-641 is 100% reactive and cures in one hour. Applying DEK-641 to properly prepared concrete is the first step to the installation of any deck coating system.

Typical Uses

DEK-Guard DEK-641 Penetrating Primer is used to anchor the DEK-Guard vehicular deck coating system to a concrete substrate. DEK-641 is designed to achieve a deep, penetrating, and permanent bond to concrete substrates. This bond is stronger than the concrete itself, making delamination nearly impossible.

Cure Time

45-60 minutes.

Application of Materials

Surface Preparation:

To provide a lasting bond, concrete surfaces receiving DEK-Guard DEK-641 Penetrating Primer must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared by shot blasting or other approved mechanical means, leaving a bare concrete surface having a profile of CSP5 or higher according to the concrete repair institute's concrete surface profile scale. The mechanically prepared substrate must then be thoroughly cleaned of grease, oils, curing membranes, wax, and any other contaminants. The substrate surface must be dry and free of laitance and unsound concrete.

Application of Materials:

DEK-Guard DEK-641 Penetrating Primer should be used in combination with RT-R component and applied over properly prepared concrete. Material is applied using a 3/8” or 1/2” nap roller or chip brush at a rate of 100 to 110 sq. ft./gallon or 14 to 16 mils. In the event of extreme porosity that leads to dry spots without a continuous film of primer an additional coat must be applied. Refer to the DEK-Guard Powder Hardener (BPO) Dosing Chart for RT-R Component and Powder Hardener (BPO) mixing rates.

Properties
  • Excellent bonding capabilities - achieves a chemical bond to other DEK-Guard system components.
  • Low viscosity- makes for easy application with a roller or a chip brush.
  • UV resistant for indoor or outdoor application.
  • Cures fast - under one hour.
  • Cures at a wide range of temperatures (-15°F - 90°F).
  • 100% reactive - VOC compliant.
  • On-Site bond test indicates whether substrate preparation is adequate before system application.
  • Seamless repairability - achieves a chemical bond with itself and with other DEK-Guard components.
  • Vapor impermeable (When used in conjunction with RT-R component and applied in two coats).

Technical Details & Test Data

Bond Test

Bond test should be conducted to determine the adequacy of the surface preparation and the bond to substrate before proceeding with the application of the primer to the entire area. DEK-641 is designed to achieve a bond to concrete substrates which exceeds the cohesive strength of the concrete itself; therefore, there should be fractured aggregate along the entire patty. If only a fine laitance or small amount of concrete is attached, additional mechanical preparation is required.

Safety & Health

Caution

DEK-Guard DEK-641 Penetrating Primer is a flammable liquid in its uncured state (as provided). All sources of ignition should be removed from the work area before handling this product. No smoking, open flames, or sparks should be permitted in and around the work area. Workers should wear protective clothing including goggles and impermeable gloves. If allowable exposure limits are exceeded, organic vapor respirators should be worn. All on-site personnel should become familiar with the SDS and hazard section of the application binder in order to increase hazard awareness.
