- Product Application
Roofing
Make sure substrate is clean and free of contaminants such as dirt, rust, loose gravel or granules, previously applied caulks or sealants and anything else that may affect proper adhesion and performance. Maintain SB 490 at room temperature before applying to ensure easy gunning and pourability. Test and evaluate to ensure adequate adhesion. When using SB 490 as a curb or pitch pan sealer, follow the form manufacturer’s recommended instructions. Use SB 500 to seal the base and 1” above the pitch pan or curb height of all penetrations to prevent sealer from flowing through the opening. Cut the widest point of tip or nozzle of cartridge and puncture the foil seal. Use caulk gun to pump SB 490 into pitch pan or curb. When using the 2 liter pouch option, remove the cap and pour sealant into pitch pan or curb. If there is remaining sealant in the pouch, squeeze the air out of pouch and reseal for reuse.
Concrete
Prior to application remove any residual contamination by mechanical abrasion, sand blasting or power washing. On green concrete, remove all release agents and loose concrete. Dry all visible and/or standing water.
Metal
Prepare all metal to ensure maximum adhesion. Remove all rust, scale and residue using a wire brush. Remove all contaminants including dirt, oil, rust, old sealants and coatings with an appropriate solvent such as alcohol. Seal Bond recommends that coated substrates be tested for proper adhesion prior to starting a project to determine suitability for use.
Priming
In most applications SB 490 will not require a primer. However, certain substrates may require a primer to ensure a long lasting bond and weatherproof seal. It is the installers responsibility to follow the manufacturers recommendations to determine whether or not a primer is needed in their specific application.
Clean-Up
Clean tools with isopropyl alcohol or mineral spirits. Avoid using water for cleanup.
- Limitations
- Some roofing membranes including APP, EPDM and TPO may require preparation or primer before using SB 490 sealant. Please consult manufacturers recommendations.
- SB 490 is recommended for flat roof or level applications. For low slope or steep applica- tions, consult Seal Bond Technical Services.
- Do not use grout, sand, gravel or any other fillers in pitch pan or curb applications.
- Do not store unused product in direct sunlight, temperatures above 80°F, or high humidity conditions as this will affect the shelf life of the product.
- Do not use on TPO without TPO primer.
- Do not use on Hypalon membranes.
- Smooth APP membranes require preparation of granulated surface of modified bitumen around the penetration.
- Do not use in areas subject to continuous immersion.
- Do not prime bonding surfaces with asphalt primer.
- Test and evaluate all paints before application.
