a. Prevent urinary tract infection
The most unique effect of cranberry is that it can effectively prevent urinary tract infections (UTI). 80% to 90% of urinary tract infections are caused by E. coli. Scholars at home and abroad have been studying the mechanism of this function for many years. Various acidic substances in cranberry can increase the acidity of urine in the bladder, and the strong acidic environment formed can kill E. coli in the urethra. In 1998, a research report by Howell AB, a scientist at the State University of New Jersey, et al. confirmed for the first time that the active substance in cranberry that is responsible for inhibiting urinary infections is the concentrated tannins or proanthocyanidins (PACs) isolated from cranberries. Procyanidins are concentrated tannins, mainly oligomers or polymers of epicatechin and epigallocatechin. The content of proanthocyanidins in cranberry is 34.3 mg/100 g. A large number of studies have shown that it has anti-bacterial adhesion properties and can prevent pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli from adhering to the epithelial cells of the urethra and the bladder wall.
