"Located on the shore of Seneca Lake in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region, US Salt has been in operation since 1893.

The refinery sits atop a rich underground supply of salt. Water needed for the plant’s operations comes from Seneca Lake, a 40-mile long body of fresh water.

Salt was first discovered in Watkins Glen in 1882. During that year the Watkins Oil Well Company was organized to drill for petroleum, gas, salt and other minerals. The company drilled a well on the hillside west of Watkins Glen, on the site of a spring which the Indians knew had medicinal properties. In September 1882 the Watkins Oil Well Company reported that, at 1,513 feet below the surface, it had reached a sufficient flow of brine to make salt.

By 1890, the first brine-producing well was put into service. Impurities in the brine made it difficult to dry the salt. The first real producer of salt in Schuyler County, N.Y., was the Glen Salt Company. It drilled wells on property at Watkins Glen, now owned by US Salt.

The Glen Salt Company drilled its first well in 1893, struck salt at 1,841 feet, and stopped drilling at 1,902 feet without reaching the bottom of the salt bed. In 1894 a second well was dug without hitting the bottom of the salt bed. By 1896 a third well was dug that stopped at 1,927 feet, still in solid salt.

Superior Crystal

ResinGard® Water Softener Salt Pellets contain a resin cleaning agent for resin bed water softeners. ResinGard® Water Softener Salt Pellets are designed to remove various raw water contaminants that become entrapped in the softener mineral bed, thereby reducing its softening capacity. ResinGard® brand contains a surface active agent (surfactant) which effectively removes contaminants from the resin bed and allow them to be flushed away in the rinse cycle of the softener regeneration. Unlike other resin cleaning agents, which have to be added separately to the brine tank, ResinGard® Cleansing Formula is distributed throughout the salt. This convenience continuously delivers its cleaning action, cycle after cycle.

Superior Rust Free® is designed for areas with high iron content. It contain a rust removal additive for resin bed water softeners, help provide rust-free softened water. It helps prevent rust discoloration on tubs, toilets, sinks, dishes, cookware, and laundry.

Superior TX-10® Iodized Salt is a food grade, cubic crystalline Sodium Chloride of variable particle size distribution. This salt is obtained from underground salt deposits by deep well solution mining. Subsequent evaporation of this brine by the vacuum pan system, under stringent process control, provides the highest purity and minimal insoluble extraneous matter for salt. The food grade anti-caking agent, Yellow Prussiate of Soda, is added in accordance with 21CFR 172.490.When this salt is incorporated into a food product, the additive is considered incidental, non-functional and exempt from label declaration under 21CFR 101.100(a)(3). Potassium Iodide is added as a nutritional source of Iodine and Dextrose, as a stabilizer.

Superior Alpha Purified Salt is a high Purity, food grade, cubic crystalline Sodium Chloride of variable particle size distribution. This salt is obtained from underground salt deposits by deep well solution mining. The brine is chemically purified and subsequently evaporated by the vacuum pan system, under stringent process control to provide the highest purity and minimal insoluble extraneous matter for salt. This product has low residual calcium and magnesium content and contains no additives.

Superior Alpha

Superior TNA-5® Salt is a high purity, food grade, cubic crystalline Sodium Chloride of variable particle size distribution. This salt is obtained from underground salt deposits by deep well solution mining. The brine is chemically purified and subsequently evaporated by the vacuum pan system, under stringent process control to provide the highest purity and minimal insoluble extraneous matter for salt. This product has the lowest residual sodium sulfate, calcium and magnesium content of all the US Salt grades. The food grade anticaking agent, Yellow Prussiate of Soda, is added in accordance with 21CFR 172.490. When this salt is incorporated into a food product, the additive is considered incidental, non-functional and except from label declaration under 21CFR 101.100(a)(3).

Coarse Sea Salt is a food grade, crystalline Sodium Chloride of various particle size distribution. This salt is evaporated from the water of the Mediterranean Sea, crystallized at the “Salinas de la Trinidad”, washed, milled and dried in a totally natural way.

Superior Crystal® - Water Softener Salt Pellets are pillow-shaped pieces of compressed, high purity, evaporated sodium chloride designed for regeneration of home water softening units. Under normal use, the uniform size and density of this product minimizes mushing, bridging or channeling for excellent percolation. The high purity of Superior Crystal® Water Softener Salt Pellets produces a virtually 100% soluble product. This eliminates messy tank cleaning and provides for efficient operation of the unit. The food grade additive Sodium Hexametaphosphate is added to the salt before compaction as a hardening agent to minimize pellet mushing.

The brine is chemically purified, and subsequently, evaporated by the vacuum pan system, under stringent process control, providing the highest purity and minimal insoluble extraneous matter for salt which contains no additives. Superior Purified USP Sodium Chloride meets the most rigid standards of the latest revision of United States Pharmacopeia and can be certified as meeting the latest European and Japanese Pharmacopeia standards. Each lot of Superior Purified USP Sodium Chloride is coded and analyzed to assure that the salt meets the highest quality standards. Certificates of Analysis (COA) are available for each shipment.
