Features & Benefits
- Product Highlight
There are three geographical origins of the “wrong” Styrax. American styrax is harvested from the tree species Liquidambar styracifula in North and Central America. Asian styrax is harvested from the Liquidambar altingiana tree in Southeast Asia. Turkish Styrax is harvested from the Liquidambar orientalis tree in Turkey.
Harvest and refinement
All types of Styrax rubber are harvested in the same way: the trees are cut and the rubber exudes from the wound on the tree, where it is collected by farmers after it has dried. The raw material Styrax can be further refined by distillation. Steam distillation offers the best quality, while alcohol distillation enables a higher yield.

Styrax rubber consists of styrene and cinnamate derivatives, which gives it its slightly sweet smell, which has a relaxing and calming effect. This pleasant smell makes Styrax a component of sweet and grass-like fragrance compositions and a raw material for the fragrance industry. Furthermore, Styrax rubber is traditionally used as incense and for therapeutic purposes.
