"The Brewer Company heritage of providing high quality coating and sealant products to our customers actually began over seventy-nine years ago. In May of 1933, The Brewer Company was founded by Pinckney P. Brewer as a company specializing in the construction of brick and concrete pavements. Shortly thereafter the Company’s emphasis turned towards the asphalt manufacturing and construction business and by 1937, The Brewer Company owned and operated three asphalt plants in the Cincinnati area. These three plants afforded us the opportunity to gain expertise and success within the industry. Between 1937 and 1987 the Company expanded to a total of eighteen asphalt and gravel plants and related construction operations in and around Cincinnati, Ohio; Miami, Florida; the U.S. Virgin Islands; and the Bahamas. During this same period, some other significant events took place within the Company. The Brewer Cote Division, now called the Coatings Division, was formed in Cincinnati in 1953. This Division created work for the employees when the asphalt plants were not operating. The Division started out packaging cold mix patching material and filling five gallon pails of pre-mixed pavement sealer by hand. In 1972, the Company expanded this operation by acquiring the roof coating manufacturing business of The Herbert Chemical Company. The Company’s pavement sealer business continued to grow and it became essential to begin manufacturing our own pavement sealer. In 1977, The Brewer Company became a licensee of Engineering Industries, Inc. and for the first time began to manufacture Brewer Cote refined tar-based pavement sealer."

"Founded in 1974, ARJAY began as a fiberglass parts supplier, catering mainly to major boat builders. Its success in this competitive area was based on developing and applying innovative materials and processes to reduce cost, raise quality and ultimately increase output. Here are a few examples of ARJAY’s innovation over the years: ARJAY was one of the first builders in the country to utilize knitted fabrics, which were new at the time, in larger, pallet quantities. ARJAY developed a line of resin application equipment which was marketed nationally through Binks. ARJAY innovation has been featured in Professional Boatbuilder Magazine. Once for gel coat application and a second time for our proactive environmental practices that actually saved money. Kardol was founded in 1939 to manufacture car appearance products. By 1980, Kardol had over 100 car appearance products and dominated its market within 100 miles of Cincinnati, Ohio. A survey at that time showed that 92% of the new car dealerships in that market used Kardol car appearance products. In 1980, H.A. (“Sam”) Bedwell bought the company from its two chemist founders. After his purchase, Sam developed a full line of repair products for the automotive paint, body and equipment aftermarket (called the “PBE” market), the marine, hardware paint sundries and consumer markets. "The 1920's was a very prosperous time in the United States. Business was good and there were many opportunities for people to improve their lives economically. Harry Lichten was a very successful chemical salesman during this time period in Chicago. One day he decided that he wanted to open his own business. He figured with all of his contacts that he would probably be able to succeed. Thus, a new company was formed-The Industrial Paint and Varnish Company. The year was 1928. The Industrial Paint and Varnish Company manufactured a wide variety of products including paints, caulks, varnishes, tile cements, etc. Over a period of years the company also drifted into the automotive field and manufactured many outstanding products including Black Swan ""Stop Leak"" (a car radiator stop-leak). This product was extremely popular because car radiators were not manufactured as well as they are today. With all the leaking radiators this product was very successful. ( Note - this product is still in the line today and is call Powdered Boiler Stop-Leak.) One day a customer asked Harry if he could manufacture a putty that would not stain. Harry responded positively even though he had no idea if he would be able to do it. This was during the depression and business was terrible so he was willing to try anything.
