Dr. William Lewis, a research scientist and inventor of superhard scratch- and abrasion-resistant coatings, founded a small consulting and development company in 1990 that later became California Hardcoating Company. Classic Colours was formed in 1989 to formulate and manufacture offset printing inks. As a new company we looked for niche markets and to offer technically superior products in difficult areas such as fluorescent and metallic printing. Waterless printing was in its infancy in the early 90's, and the only source of ink was from Japan. We worked with waterless printers in the UK and many in Scandinavia to develop a full range of waterless inks. We market our waterless inks to many countries worldwide and 5 years ago added waterless UV curing inks to our extensive range. Every type of ink that is available to the conventional offset printer can now be supplied in a waterless formulation. Although waterless inks are the main focus of our development projects, we have not forgotten conventional offset, and continue to improve our ranges of fluorescent and metallic inks for this process.

With the help of a consulting firm, Chemline took the necessary steps to help with the burst in growth by hiring talented chemists and technical experts from the industry (all of which are still with us today). By adding key personnel, Chemline was positioned to grow again and over the next 7 years, producing $12M in revenue. The decision was made to purchase a building located in St Louis, MO and Chemline began manufacturing its own product in 2004. After attracting a few industry pros, Chemline began to grow again and made several successful acquisitions. In 2010 sales hit $17 M and Chemline was on a roll! We purchased more buildings, more equipment and one more business – TA Davies. TA Davies gave Chemline a footprint on the west coast and our message resonated with consumers. Aexcel Corporation changed its name in 1988 to establish a new corporate identity and began to focus on developing Traffic Safety Paints. The company moved into a 70,000 square-foot building with a large warehouse in 1989 and experienced rapid growth. In 1993, John S. Milgram was appointed President and the company worked on developing improved Uthane technologies. Powder coatings eventually won the battle, so the company had to seek new products and markets.
