- Complex Formation
The most important property of AP8401G is its ability to form water soluble complexes with polyvalent ions (e.g. calcium, magnesium, lead, copper, zinc, cadmium, mercury, manganese, iron) over a wide pH range from 2 to 13.5. MGDA usually forms 1:1 complexes, i. e. 1 mol of MGDA chelates binds to 1 mol of metal ions. These complexes remain stable, especially in alkaline media and even at temperatures of up to 100°C. In aqueous solutions, MGDA competes for metal ions with other anions such as hydroxide, sulfate, sulfide, carbonate and oxalate that form sparingly soluble metal salts. The formation of chelates reduces the concentration of free metal ions to such an extent that the solubility products of many sparingly soluble metal salts are no longer exceeded. The result is that the salt no longer percipitate or may even redissolve.

Household Cleaning
- AP8401G effectively replaces phosphorous containing builders in dishwashing detergents.
- It enhances the cleaning power of a cleaner /detergent by sequestering hard water ions from water and dirt.
- It prevents the deactivation of surfactants form hard water metal ions
- It also deactivates transition metal ions thus stabilizing detergents that contain peroxides.
Industrial & Institutional Cleaning.
- AP8401G forms stable, water-soluble metal complexes with all potentially harmful metal ions.
- It dissolves existing and prevents new scales from causing problems in water circulation equipment (in e.g. the power, brewing ,and sugar industries).
- Because of its low molecular weight this chelate performs very well in short contact cleaning.
Metal Treatment
- AP8401G is very suitable as a metal carrier, a stabilizer of process baths and for neutralizing trace impurities.
- It can be used in e.g. alkaline Zinc and electroless Copper plating.
Polymer Processing
- AP8401G acts as a carrier of heavy metal ions.
- It also conserves natural rubber lattices by deactivating metal ion impurities that can catalyze decomposition.
Textile Industry
- AP8401G complexes the transition metal ions that would otherwise catalyze the decomposition of the peroxide bleaching agent.
- It also improves the performance of dye baths, where hard water metal ions like Ca and Mg inhibit dye from penetrating into the fiber.
Printing Inks
- AP8401G can be used to overcome the formation of insoluble resign soaps in water thinned inks (which may cause unwanted discoloration) resulting in clear and color-stalbe inks.

Storage & Handling
- Storage Recommendation
Store in original packing or in PVC, PP,PE, stainless steel or bituminized tanks. Avoid contact with aluminum, zinc, nickel, copper and copper alloys. AP8401G should be stored in a dry place at temperatures below approx. 50°C. AP8401G is hygroscopic and soluble in water, with the result that they absorb moisture very quickly. Opened containers should be resealed tightly after each removal of product to prevent absorption of moisture.
It is advised to re-test the material after three years of storage.
