- Recommended Uses
Geogard® Boost PHC delivers a broad spectrum of microbial protection with reduced levels of Phenoxyethanol for creams, lotions and moisturizers and conditioners. A single dose liquid solution which simplifies manufacturing logistics.
The product is easily formulated into lotions and conditioners and is effective at a pH range of 5-8.- Formulation Guidance
Geogard® Boost PHC should be used in the range 0.3 – 1.6%.
It is dispersible in cosmetic emulsions such as skin creams, lotions and hair conditioners.
Geogard® Boost PHC can be added at any stage of production and temperatures of up to 75°C are well-tolerated, however it is more normal to add preservatives at the end of the hot process when the temperature has reduced to around 40°C.
Stirring is required to ensure uniform dispersal of the preservative ingredients.

Technical Details & Test Data
- Microbial Protection Performance
Method overview
The Lonza Preservation Efficacy Test method was performed to evaluate antimicrobial performance. The study was performed over 28 days, with sampling performed every 7 days and an additional bacterial sampling point at 2 days.
- Formulations were inoculated with single cultures containing either a bacterial load of 1.0x106 to 1.0x107 CFU/g or a yeast and fungi microbial load of 1.0x105 to 1.0x106 CFU/g.
- Challenge microorganisms are depicted in table below.
- Formulations were sampled at each time interval and recovered using the quantitative pour plate technique.
- The microbial recoveries of each sample were calculated. Counting limits of >330 CFU/g and <10 CFU/g were employed.
(Minimum reportable value <100 CFU/g)

Unpreserved Non-ionic Lotion – Susceptibility to Bacteria
The unpreserved non-ionic lotion is susceptible to bacterial contamination therefore requires additional microbial protection measures.
Bactericidal Performance of Geogard® Boost PHC (0.6% w/w containing <0.4% w/w Phenoxyethanol)
Geogard® Boost PHC at 0.6% (containing <0.4% Phenoxyethanol) delivers bactericidal protection in a non-ionic lotion.
Unpreserved Non-ionic Lotion – Susceptibility to Fungi
The unpreserved non-ionic lotion is susceptible to fungal contamination therefore requires additional microbial protection measures.
Fungicidal Performance of Geogard® Boost PHC (0.6% w/w containing <0.4% w/w Phenoxyethanol)
Geogard® Boost PHC at 0.6% (containing <0.4% Phenoxyethanol) delivers fungicidal protection in a non-ionic lotion.
Unpreserved Hair Conditioner – Susceptibility to Bacteria and Fungi
The unpreserved hair conditioner is not susceptible to bacterial contamination
as a result of the use of particular ingredients and pH range. The conditioner is susceptible to fungal contamination and therefore requires additional microbial protection measures.Fungicidal Performance of Geogard® Boost PHC (0.3% w/w containing <0.2% w/w Phenoxyethanol)
Geogard® Boost PHC at 0.3% (containing <0.2% Phenoxyethanol) delivers fungicidal protection in a hair conditioner formulation
