Proxel® BD Antimicrobial

1 of 25 products in this brand
Proxel® BD Antimicrobial is a broad spectrum industrial preservative for use in aqueous systems such as paints, synthetic polymer emulsions, and thickeners. Its neutral pH helps avoid electrolyte shock. Based on the proven Arch chemical, 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT), Proxel® BD Antimicrobial has an easy to use aqueous dispersion, additives compatible with customer products and processes, and good flow properties. It also contains no added formaldehyde, has low acute mammalian toxicity, and has a broad pH compatibility.

Functions: Anti-Microbial Agent, Preservative

End Uses: Waterborne Coating

Synonyms: 1,2-Benzisothiazol-3-one, 1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-one, 1,2-Benzisothiazolone, 1,2-Benzoisothiazol-3-one, 1,2-benzothiazolin-3-one, 1,2-benzothiazoline-3-one, 2,3-Dihydro-1,2-benzothiazol-3-one, 2,3-Dihydrobenzisothiazol-3-one, 3-Hydroxy-1,2-benzisothiazole, Benzisothiazolin-3-one, Benzisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolone, Benzo[d]isothiazol-3(2H)-one, Benzoisothiazol-3-one

    Applications & Uses

    Coating Type
    Amount to Use

The dose required to protect aqueous systems will depend on several factors. These include the type of product, its susceptibility to microbiological attack, the extent to which micro-organisms can gain access, the organisms present, the pH of the product, the temperature of storage and the length of time for which protection is required.

In most new cases, trials are necessary to optimize the needs of an individual system. Typical addition levels for trial purposes are shown in Table 3.
If higher levels are required, we recommend reference to the Safety Data Sheet

    When To Add

The exceptional stability of PROXEL BD to both heat and to pH variations normally permits its addition together with the water at an early stage of manufacture, since the non-volatility of BIT ensures no loss of antimicrobial activity when the product is subsequently heated. However, the antimicrobial activity of BIT may be affected by the presence of some oxidizing agents, for example, persalts or sulphites.

    Antimicrobial Properties

Manufacturers of aqueous-based products need to prevent the growth of the many different types of micro-organisms that can occur in these systems. Thus, the requirement is for a broad-spectrum preservative. The effectiveness of PROXEL BD against a wide range of microorganisms is shown in Table 1.
