Aversion Technologies Nonivamide Powder (PAVA) is the active ingredient in most pepper sprays. It is also being used by law enforcement in “paint-ball” guns as a powerful non-lethal weapon. When the spray comes in contact with skin, especially eyes or mucous membranes, it is very painful and completely disarming.

Aversion Technologies Capsaicin Powder is the most pungent, spicy-hot substance known to man. Pure capsaicin is the “gold-standard” for hotness. The tiniest amount produces a fiery hot product.  Capsaicin is the substance that causes the burning feeling in the mouth or nose (any contact with mucous membranes) and it also increases secretion of gastric juice. Capsaicin comes in two forms – natural, which is made from hot peppers, and synthetic, which is produced in a laboratory. The efficacy of the two forms appears to be identical.

Aversion Technologies Oleoresin Capsicum Oil is the oil extracted from chili peppers and is responsible for making these peppers taste hot. This ingredient is used in the production of hot sauces and it is often added to medicated creams, lotions, and sprays in order to treat muscle or joint pain. It may also be used in pepper spray, a product designed to be used for self-defense purposes. Possible side effects of capsicum oleoresin include redness or burning at the application site or difficulty breathing or swallowing if the product is ingested.Capsicum oleoresin is available in several concentrations and custom strengths are available. Typically it is used at 6.6% concentration (1,000,000 SHU), 40% (6,400,000 SHU), and 50% (8,000,000 SHU). Decolorized capsicum oleoresin is available upon request, colors ranging from <1000cu for 40% concentration to <200cu for 6% concentration.

Aversion Technologies Denatonium Saccharide is the most bitter substances known, judged to be 5 times more bitter than denatonium benzoate. Detectable at as little as a few parts per billion, this compound will make a product so bitter that children and pets will not be able to swallow it. Denatonium saccharide makes sweet but highly toxic products such as antifreeze and detergents taste foul. Research shows that people can detect denatonium saccharide in water at 50 parts per billion. Denatonium saccharide is bitter at 1 to 10 ppm, at 30 to 100 ppm virtually any product becomes impossible to masticate. Denatonium saccharide is also stable and inert. In addition, so little is needed that the properties of the product remain unchanged.
