BART Liposovit-C- powder liposomal vitamin C

Liposovit-C™ is liposomal vitamin C available in the form of a homogeneous powder, intended for multi-factorial support of the body in states of increased demand for L-ascorbic acid. Works of the Research & Development Department of BART allowed us to achieve liposomes composed of a single bilayer of phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) molecules, which is the external barrier of the liposomal vesicle and entraps L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) molecules in the aqueous phase (Figure 1). These liposomes are then subjected to drying process, which largely determines the special properties of the product.

Features & Benefits

Properties

Liposovit-C™ developed by us:
• Protects vitamin C from chemical and enzymatic degradation during storage and during transit through the digestive tract,
• Protects intestinal epithelium of the consumer from irritation resulting from taking increased doses of vitamin C,
• Helps to, as proven in own research:
• Obtain a much higher content of vitamin C in the bloodstream (85% more after 4h following administration, over 70% more after 10.5h), which is equivalent to its higher bioavailability,
• Prolong – approximately 2.5-times – the presence of vitamin C in blood,
• Enhance the effectiveness of vitamin C supplementation, i.e. achieve an equivalent therapeutic effect with lower doses of the active substance,
• Enables slow and sustained release of vitamin C from the liposomal vesicle,
• Is fully safe, biodegradable and biocompatible.

Why Liposomal Vitamin C
  • Hydrophilic by nature, vitamin C has poor ability to diffuse through the lipid bilayer of intestinal epithelial cells (26), which limits its bioavailability. Ascorbic acid is unstable, sensitive to temperature, light (1,16) and elevated pH (1), extremely susceptible to oxidation (1,16).
  • Available literature data indicate that an effective way to increase the stability and bioavailability of vitamin C is nanoencapsulation, especially in lipid carriers. These types of carriers – most commonly used in the pharmaceutical, food and agricultural industries – include liposomes (16).
  • Liposomes are highly effective in entrapping active substances. They stabilize them (27,28,29) provide protection against degradation caused by i.a. the presence of oxygen, other food ingredients (27), incorrect pH, light or digestive enzymes (29). This way they also prevent the active substance from being metabolized prior to reaching
  • target tissues (28). At the same time, encapsulation of active substances in liposomal vesicles minimizes their side effects (30), such as epithelial irritation, also in the gut. Intake of liposomal vitamin C in supra-optimal daily doses of more than 1-2 g may also significantly reduce the risk of gastrointestinal disorders in sensitive individuals (c.f.: 3,31), including osmotic diarrhea (32).
  • Structural similarity of liposomal vesicles to biological membranes facilitates intestinal absorption of active substances, thus increasing their bioavailability and, consequently, their effectiveness. In the case of liposomes, delivery of active substances to the cells takes place in a controlled manner, either by fusion or endocytosis (30).
  • The results of numerous experimental studies, also involving animals and humans, indicate an advantage of liposomal forms of vitamin C over its conventional form (27,33,34). This was also confirmed by own research conducted in BART Ltd. on Liposovit-C™. The results thereof are presented below.

Applications & Uses

Food & Nutrition Applications
Uniqueness of the LIPOSOVIT-C™ Technology

The innovative technological solution applied, entailing i.a. dehydration of acquired liposomes:
• Increases storage stability of Liposovit-C™, eliminating the need to ensure cooling conditions during transport and storage,
• Eliminates the need to add preservatives, making the product safe for people suffering from widely understood food hypersensitivity,
• Allows for complete elimination of alcohol and other organic solvents from both the production process and the final product,
• Ensures that the product can be easily encapsulated and applied directly in powder mixtures. As proven in own research, the drying process does not impact the quality and size of liposomes (<300 nm).

Indications

Liposovit-C™ is recommended for general population during increased demand for vitamin C, observed i.a.:
• During colds and other viral infections,
• In the case of persons doing strenuous exercise,
• In seniors who may have impaired absorption of ascorbic acid from the gut or disorders of its reabsorption from the kidneys,
• In active and passive smokers,
• In the case of food allergies,
• In prediabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension and obesity, i.e. medical conditions increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Vitamin C supplementation is also recommended more and more often in the case of persons with polymorphisms in the genes encoding i.a. vitamin C transporters (1,2).

Results of research on LIPOSOVIT-C

In order to confirm enhanced bioavailability of Liposovit-C™, its pharmacokinetic profile was determined and compared with the profile of non-liposomal equivalent of vitamin C. The study consisted of administration of the same dose of Liposovit-C™ and conventional vitamin C to a selected group of individuals whose ascorbic acid concentration in blood serum was determined at strictly defined intervals (HPLC and UV detection). The assays were carried out in an external laboratory and the obtained pharmacokinetic profiles are presented in Figure 2.
Results of the experiment show that Liposovit-C™ administered orally helps to:
• Increase the effectiveness of vitamin C supplementation,
• Obtain a much higher content of vitamin C in the bloodstream (85% more after 4h following oral administration, over 70% more after 10.5h),
• Prolong the presence of vitamin C in blood – about 2.5 times.

Safety & Health

Recommended Precautions

Vitamin C is a safe and well-tolerated substance. Nevertheless, people at risk of kidney stones or already suffering from the disease are advised against L-ascorbic acid supplementation. In individuals with hemochromatosis, combined intake of vitamin C and iron may increase the risk of excessive accumulation of iron in the body and requires a reduction of dietary iron intake (1,3). Due to the risk of haemolytic anemia, caution is also recommended when using high doses of vitamin C in patients with glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) (4).
