- Pongamia Glabra is grown in different parts of the world. There are important plantations in different parts of India. The kernel accounts for 95.5% of the weight of the fruit, and contains about 30% oil. Each tree can produce 8 to 24 kilos of fruit. Oil extraction varies with this technique, from 18 to 28%.
- Karanja belongs to the family Leguminaceae, and reaches a height of about 8 meters although some members have reached heights of 18 meters.
- Its flowers are mauve or white and appear between April and September according to the region.
- Between 10 and 11 months later, between February and May, the fruits are ripe. They are elliptical and about 7.5 centimeters long and 3 centimeters wide. They have one or two white nuclei covered with red skin.
