Karanja oil is derived from the Punjam / Karanja tree (Pongamia glabra), which is found throughout India. The pit represents 95.5% of the weight of the fruit, and contains about 30% of oil. The extraction yield of the oil varies with the technique, in the range of 18 to 28%. The Karanja tree belongs to the family Leguminaceae, and reaches a height of about 8 m, although they reach 18 m. Its white or mauve flowers appear between April and September depending on the region. About 10 to 11 months later, between February and May, the fruits ripened. They are elliptical and measure about 7.5 cm long and 3 cm wide. They contain one or two white pits covered with red skin. Each tree can provide 8 to 24 kg of pits. It has a gentle action to remove dead cells and can be used as an imperfection agent mask. It has many other beneficial properties like anti-aging, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.
