- Karanja oil comes from the Punjam or Karanja tree found in India. The kernel accounts for 95.5% of the weight of the fruit, and contains about 30% oil. Each tree can produce 8 to 24 kilos of fruit. Oil extraction varies with this technique, from 18 to 28%. Karanja belongs to the family Leguminaceae, and reaches a height of about 8 meters although some members have reached heights of 18 meters.
- Its flowers are mauve or white and appear between April and September according to the region. Between 10 and 11 months later, between February and May, the fruits are ripe. They are elliptical and about 7.5 centimeters long and 3 centimeters wide. They have one or two white nuclei covered with red skin.
