Tamanu has been cultivated in Polynesia for centuries and is known for its medicinal properties. Takamaka (Calophyllum Inophyllum) is the name of the Tamanu tree. It can measure up to 20 meters and 2 meters in diameter. The fruit is a drupe similar to a walnut, around 2 to 4 cm, green in color. The flesh is usually firm and not very juicy. The single seed is brown in color and protected by a spongy layer.
Takamaka is a tree that grows in xerophytic environments. It is found especially on tropical coastlines in Africa, Asia, and the Polynesian islands. Tamanu oil produced in Tahiti is a reference, but we find the oil in other countries such as India, Thailand or Madagascar.
Tamanu has many properties. The oil is rich in Omega 6 and 9, as well as Vitamin A, E, F and K.
