Croda's niche surfactants and fiber care agents are recommended in the formulation of household carpet / rug shampoos, upholstered furniture cleaners, spotters and stain removers. Consumer products in this category are usually marketed as concentrated or ready-to-use liquids, trigger sprays and aerosols. They are formulated to wet the pile or fabric surface and take up oily and greasy soils. Shampoos in particular provide a system that traps soil in suspension and dries to a solid residue. The brittle residue containing the soil particles is then removed by vacuuming. The addition of solvents such as isopropyl alcohol or glycol ethers can aid the removal of grease and dirt.
- Fibre Care
Fiber protection and repair are relatively new claims for carpet and upholstery care. Croda's Coltide Naturals range of hydrolysed and functionalised proteins have been proven to provide effective conditioning of natural fibers such as cotton, linen and silk thereby reducing fiber erosion and degradation. The Coltide Naturals range are moisture retentive, with the low molecular weight variants enabling penetration of fibers to reduce brittleness. Coltides are stable over a wide pH range and are compatible with anionic, nonionic and amphoteric surfactants. Coltide Naturals offer excellent label claims and marketing potential

Functional ingredients for performance driven results
Croda offers a variety of speciality ingredients to give excellent cleaning and finishing of external and internal surfaces. Additives include surfactants and degreasers for effective removal of road soils, synthetic waxes ensure long lasting shine and low foaming surfactants with superior wetting to control foam where needed.

- Surfactants
Combinations of Crodasinic LS30 and sodium lauryl sulfate are suggested as ideal bases for carpet shampoos. The required efficiency and cost of the end product will determine the active content.
The main advantages of Crodasinic LS30 are low penetration of carpet backing and its non-sticky residue on drying which reduces mildew and fungus growth and rapid resoiling. It also possesses excellent foaming and low odor and color characteristics. Additionally, it depresses the temperature at which sodium lauryl sulfate crystallizes and this produces a more stable product in the package. Due to its corrosion inhibiting properties, Crodasinic LS30 is particularly useful in aerosol carpet / suede/ nubuck and fabric cleaners packed in tinplate containers. It is readily biodegradable as defined in Directive 93/21/EEC test OECD301E.
NatraSense AG-810 is a low colored alkyl polyglucoside surfactant that provides excellent detergency, wetting and foaming. It also provides brilliant clarity over a wide pH range and with inorganics. NatraSense AG-810 can be used in concentrated applications, providing stability to the formulation. The lack of a gelling phase also provides the formulator with ease of use. In household and I&I applications, NatraSense AG-810 provides caustic stability, builder compatibility, detergency and hydrotroping benefits, therefore providing the formulator
greater flexibility and improved cost performance.Crodafos 810A and G26A are a range of alkyl ether phosphates possessing excellent detergency, wetting and solubilisation properties. They are stable in strongly alkaline systems and function as coupling agents/hydrotropes for nonionic surfactants which may be included in cleaning systems to increase soil removal.
Synperonic 13/7-85 possesses a low surface tension and functions as a wetting and degreasing agent. In combination with Crodasinic LS30 in aqueous solution it forms an extremely effective cleaning system.
Other nonionic surfactants which may be evaluated for their wetting and dispersing properties include the Crovol 70 range of ethoxylated vegetable oils.
- Heavy Duty Cleaners
Speciality additives for powerful cleaning & degreasing
The effective performance of heavy duty cleaners is achieved by formulating with appropriate surfactants in either solvent or strongly alkaline formulation bases. Croda offers a selection of surfactants and performance additives to enhance the cleaning and degreasing properties of such products.
Included in this category are pressure wash concentrates, traffic film removers, and industrial cleaners such as bottle washes and solvent based degreasers.
Alkali stable surfactants
Nonionic Brij alcohol ethoxylates perform as emulsifiers, solubilisers, wetting and dispersing agents to impart high levels of wetting and detergency to cleaning systems. Synperonic 13/7-85 in particular will wet, penetrate, Lift and emulsify oil and grime. Brijs are chemically stable at extreme pH and are often preferred in alkaline industrial cleaners because of their stability and relatively low foaming properties.
Crodafos alkyl ether phosphates and Crodasinic sarcosinates are anionic surfactants stable in strongly alkaline systems. Crodafos T5A and Crodasinic LS30 both exhibit good foaming properties and facilitate wetting, penetration as well as subsequent water rinsing. At elevated temperatures, Crodafos products are more efficient wetting agents than the parent alcohol or ethoxylated alcohol and are less affected by electrolytes.
