Performance Highlights

Performance

The cleaning performance of ModiSurf has been assessed against a variety of common household soils using a number of surface substrates. The test formulations used were chosen to offer the widest possible spread of applications, ranging from acidic toilet cleaning formulations to alkaline multi-surface cleaners.

Limescale

ModiSurf helps reduce the build up of limescale deposits on both glass and polymeric substrates. Transparent slides were treated with test formulations before allowing calcium bicarbonate to deposit on to the slides and then rinsing off. The light transmittance through the slides was then measured. In tests conducted on glass, polyacrylate and polycarbonate, surfaces pre-treated with ModiSurf showed much reduced post cleaning residual limescale deposit when compared with a blank and competitor material.

Picture 1 below shows the effect of ModiSurf on limescale repellency on glass at a range of addition levels in a non-ionic shower cleaner formulation. Almost 100% transmittance was achieved with an addition level of only 0.5%. Note, top of each slide is untreated with cleaning solution to allow for handling.

Soil Repellency
The ability of ModiSurf to repel common household soils has been assessed on different surface substrates highlight the potential for application in multi-surface cleaners. Test substrates were pre-treated with test formulation before applying a controlled layer of soil (30% smooth peanut butter in water) and allowing this dry on. The surface was then rinsed and the gloss measurement determined by reflection at a 20° angle. The performance of ModiSurf on ceramic surfaces was assessed using both gloss and matt finish tiles. On both tile types and in both acid and alkaline cleaning formulations, ModiSurf shows a vast improvement in cleaning performance compared with the blank. ModiSurf also outperforms the competitor material across series of tests.

Aluminum and steel were chosen as test metal substrates due to their abundant use in household surfaces. In alkaline cleaning formulations, ModiSurf shows improved cleaning performance versus both the blank and competitor formulation.

Rinse off resistance
In order to demonstrate the ability of ModiSurf to adhere to surfaces and to resist rinse off, we assessed its ability to repel oily soils over a number of wash cycles. Tiles were separated into two halves using tape. A toilet bowl cleaner blank was applied to one half and the same cleaner containing 1% ModiSurf was applied to the other. The tiles were allowed to dry for 30 minutes at ambient temperature. The tiles were rinsed by immersing in water for 5 seconds, after which they were dried vertically for 30 minutes at ambient temperature. This process was repeated 2, 3 and 4 times.

The soil repellency was tested by applying a controlled layer of soil (30% smooth peanut butter in water) and allowing this to dry on. The surface was then rinsed and the gloss measurement determined by reflection at a 20° angle. ModiSurf demonstrates good resistance to wash off with a clear difference to the control even after four wash cycles, as shown in figure 4 below.
