Odor Reduction Testing (Performance Testing) against IPA

Odor Reduction Performance : With its anti-malodor technology, NeutraFresh™ HE100 effectively reduces or removes odors caused by acids, sulfur, amines, and nitrogen compounds. It involves chemical reactions such as neutralizing acids, odor receptor blocking and forming new less odorous molecules.

Odor Reduction Testing – Performance Testing against Isopentylamine (IPA)
In Figure 2, GCMS analysis shows reduction of IPA by NeutraFresh™ HE100 and a close competitive product as function of increasing volume. Increasing volumes of 0.3% active solutions of NeutraFresh™ HE100 and 2% of competitive product were plotted on the x-axis (mL). The results show that despite a lower dosage, NeutraFresh™ HE100 achieved a higher odor neutralization of IPA versus 2% of competitive product.

Odor Reduction Testing – Performance Testing against Nonanone (NN)
0.3% of NeutraFresh™ HE100 was compared to 2% of a competitive product using GCMS analysis, to determine the effectiveness against NN. The results in Figure 3 shows that NeutraFresh™ HE100 delivers excellent odor reduction performance at a lower dosage as compared to a market-leading competitive odor neutralization technology.

Odor Reduction Testing – Performance Testing against 3-mercapto-3-methylbutan-1-ol (MMB)
Using GCMS analysis, 0.3% of NeutraFresh™ HE100 was compared to 2% of a competitive product to determine the effectiveness against MMB. The results in the below Figure4 shows that NeutraFresh™ HE100 delivers superior odor reduction performance at a lower dosage as compared to the competitive odor neutralization technology.

LIGAVA Method on NeutraFresh™ HE100

LIGAVA Method on NeutraFresh HE100
The effectiveness of NeutraFresh™ HE100 as an odor neutralizer against a wide range of malodors was assessed using the in-vitro LIGAVA (Liquid to gas vaporizer) method. A known concentration of selected malodor is injected into the LIGAVA and as it travels through the heating block, the sample is vaporized from liquid to gas. The odor neutralizer, which in this case is NeutraFresh™ HE100, is then injected in the same way and is vaporized as it travels through the heating block. This results in a combination of malodor and NeutraFresh™ HE100 in vapor form in the system.
Following that, a known volume of clean, odor-free air is passed through the system into a Nalophan bag, carrying with it the vaporized malodor and odor neutralizer in defined concentrations. This Nalophan bag is then detached from the LIGAVA and placed in a sampling device for a trained expert panelist to assess the odor strength.
After smelling the puff of air released from the sampling device, the panelists will score the intensity of the odor according to an intensity scale (Figure 5). The malodor neutralization score is based on comparison to the malodor-only control samples. A score greater than 70% is considered a good effect, and a score of around 80% neutralization would be considered excellent. The results in Figure 6 show that NeutraFresh™ HE100 is highly effective against a wide range of malodors.

NeutraFresh™ HE100 Formulated Air Fresheners against Five Malodors
  • Air freshener sprays formulated with NeutraFresh™ HE100 were tested against five malodors - sweat, kitchen, cigarette, bathroom and cat urine - to compare the odor neutralizing effects of NeutraFresh™ HE100 with a competitive product in air freshener applications.
  • The test was carried out in glass jars simulating room conditions. Filter papers were contaminated with the malodors according to tests based on the LIGAVA device and extrapolated to the volume of the glass jar. The glass jars were stored for 18 hours at room temperature to allow the malodors to fully penetrate throughout the jars. After 18 hours, the test products were sprayed in a controlled manner into the jar and the malodor intensities were evaluated after 5 minutes. Evaluations were carried out using the LMS scale in Figure 5.
  • The results in Figure 7 demonstrate that NeutraFresh™ HE100 has superior odor neutralization capacity in air freshener applications when compared to the competitive product. The odor neutralization capacity of NeutraFresh™ HE100 also increases with dosage.

Odor Neutralizing Action of NeutraFresh™ HE100 in Air Freshener

Odor Neutralizing Action of NeutraFresh™ HE100 in Air Freshener Formulations with Fragrances

Air freshener sprays formulated with two different fragrances and NeutraFresh™ HE100 were tested against bathroom, kitchen and cigarette malodors to compare the odor neutralizing effects of NeutraFresh™ HE100 in formulations with fragrances versus fragrance only controls. The test was carried out with the LIGAVA method.
The results in Figure 8 showed that air freshener formulations with fragrances and NeutraFresh™ HE100 combined had significantly better odor neutralization capacity than fragrance only formulations. The data also demonstrates that NeutraFresh™ HE100 works via odor neutralizing action and not just by masking of odor.

NeutraFresh™ HE100 in Fabric Care, Laundry & Sweat Malodor

Fabric Care

  • A combination of factors including bacterial growth, impregnated sweat or humidity causes malodor on fabric. To prove and compare the odor neutralizing effects of NeutraFresh™ HE100 versus a competitive product in a liquid detergent base for fabric care applications, in-vivo tests were conducted on socks and t-shirts. The socks were made of 69% cotton, 27% polyester, 3% elastane and 1% polyamide and the t-shirts were made of 74% cotton and 26% polyester.
  • The fabrics had been sprayed with a specified amount of dirty laundry and European sweat malodor solutions. They were stored in a plastic bag for 24 hours at room temperature to allow the malodor to penetrate all the fabrics. After 24 hours, the fabrics were hand washed in 3 liters of hot water and a liquid detergent base containing NeutraFresh™ HE100 and competitive product at various dosages. After washing, the damp fabrics underwent direct in-vivo evaluation using the LMS scale in Figure 5. When the fabrics were dry, they were re-evaluated in the same way.


Dirty Laundry Malodor
As seen in Figure 9, the liquid detergents with both 0.3% and 0.5% of NeutraFresh™ HE100 show a higher odor neutralization capacity as compared to 2% of competitive product. The higher the dosage of NeutraFresh™ HE100, the higher its odor neutralization capacity.

European Sweat Malodor
Similarly, in Figure 10, liquid detergents with both 0.3% and 0.5% of NeutraFresh™ HE100 show a significantly higher odor neutralization capacity as compared to 2% of competitive product. The odor neutralization capacity of NeutraFresh™ HE100 increases with increasing dosage.

Formulating with NeutraFresh™ HE100 is easier and more effective with its excellent compatibility with high salt and high surfactant-based formulations.
  • To demonstrate compatibility of NeutraFresh™ HE100 in liquid laundry detergents, NeutraFresh™ HE100 was added to a fragrance-free liquid laundry detergent to give a clear formulation (Figure 11).

Anti-bacterial Compatibility
A solution of NeutraFresh™ HE100 in 0.5% of benzalkonium chloride (BKC) gives a clear solution whereas the solution of competitor odor neutralizer forms a precipitate with hazy white liquid (Figure 12). Odor neutralizers based upon NeutraFresh™ HE100 can be produced easily and quickly with simple blending equipment.
