Traditional Use:
Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi or carum copticum) has been widely used in traditional medicine as stomachic, carminative, expectorant, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antiparasitic and antipyretic remedy.

In Cosmetics:
In vitro trials prove that Ajwain fruit essential oil has strong antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidative activity. The good efficacy against gram positive and gram negative bacteria is associated with its highthymol content. Ajwain essential oil exhibits antifungal activity against a range of Aspergillus and Fusarium species as well as curvularia lunata. The product could be used in antimicrobial personal care formulations in order to treat highly drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. Another study demonstrates good antifungal effects against Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum can is and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

In Food Supplements:
In vitro trials demonstrate that the essential oil of Ajwain fruits has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiparasitic (against protoscoleces), antiplatelet and immunological activity. In addition, under a randomized place to controlled clinical trial, Ajwain essential oil was assayed for the analgesic effect in neuropathic feet burn. Results revealed that Ajwain essential oil significantly reduced the feetburn compared to placebo. In Food: Ajwain essential oil shows good efficacy against Staphycoccus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeriamonocytogenes, Escherichia coli and Salmonella Enteritidis. The extract is used as a natural antimicrobial ingredient in the food industry.
