- With a fresh, distinctive aroma, this versatile and well known oil has a myriad of benefits and uses. Tea Tree Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and lateral branches of the Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to the mid east coast of Australia. This plant has been used in traditional medicine in Australia for centuries. With over 92 compounds in its chemical makeup, it is no wonder Tea Tree oil has such a wide array of benefits and properties and has become so popular. A natural antiseptic, with anti-bacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial properties, amongst others it is a valued addition to products ranging from household cleaning products to skin care, hair care and bath products.
- Botany
- The Melaleuca Alternifolia is a small tree that grows up to 7 meters that is native to south east Queensland and northern NSW and ranges in Australia. It is a member of the Myrtaceae family and grows along streams and swamp flats. The leaves are soft, smooth and linear in shape and up to 35mm long and are rich in oil. The tree flowers usually in spring and early summer with white/cream colored masses.

- Indigenous Australians have long recognized the benefits of the Tea Tree. They used to crush the leaves and the oil inhaled to relieve colds and headaches, or the crushed leaves were applied to wounds and skin abrasions. But it was only in the 1920s, after Arthur Penfold, an Australian state government chemist, published a series of papers on tea tree oil's antiseptic properties that this oil's benefits became more widely known.

- Tea Tree Oil is a complex mixture of terpene hydrocarbons and tertiary alcohols, and the main compounds responsible for the antimicrobial activity are terpinen-4-ol and 1, 8-cineole. The international standard regulation for TTO sets a minimum content of 30% terpinen-4-ol and a maximum content of 15% 1,8-cineole.
