- Chemical Composition in Mulberry Leaf Extract
The main ingredients of mulberry leaves
1) Flavonoids
The flavonoids in mulberry leaves account for 1% to 3% of the dry weight of mulberry leaves, and they are a type of plant with high stem and leaf content in the plant kingdom. Korean and Japanese scholars isolated 9 types of flavonoids from mulberry leaves, mainly rutin (rutin), quercetin, isoquercitrin, quercetin-3-triglucoside and other compounds.
2) Alkaloids
Alkaloids are the main active ingredients of mulberry leaves. Japanese scholar Asano et al. (1994) isolated a variety of polyhydroxy alkaloids from mulberry leaves, including DNJ (1-deoxynojirimycin), N-methyl-1-DNJ ( N-Me-DNJ), 2-oxo-α-D galactopyranoside-1-DNJ, fagomine, 1.4-dideoxy-1.4-imino-D-arabitol, 1.4-dideoxy-1.4- 7 kinds of imino-(2-oxo-β-D-glucopyranoside)-D-arabitol and 1α, 2β, 3α, 4β-tetrahydroxy-norscopolane (norscopolamine) Alkaloids. Among them, DNJ (1-deoxynojirimycin) is unique to mulberry leaves in the plant kingdom.
3) Phytosterol
The content of phytosterols in mulberry leaves is 3 to 4 times higher than that of ordinary plants. Mainly β-sitosterol (β-sitosterol), stigmasterol (Stigmasterol), camposterol (Camposterol), β-sitolsterol β-D-glucoside (β-sitolsterol β-D-glucoside), lupulol ( Lupeol (Lupeol), Myoinositol (Myoinositol), insect metamorphosis hormone, Inokosterone (Inokosterone), Ecdysterone (Ecdysterone) and so on.
4) γ-aminobutyric acid (γ-aminobutyric acid)
The abundant γ-aminobutyric acid (average content of 226 mg/100g) in mulberry leaves is eye-catching. γ-aminobutyric acid is converted from glutamic acid, and mulberry leaves have the highest content of γ-glutamic acid (2323 mg). /100g).
5) Mulberry leaf polysaccharide
Mulberry leaves are rich in mulberry leaf polysaccharides, which can significantly reduce blood sugar and inhibit the increase in blood lipids.

- Mulberry Leaf Extract Powder Benefits
a) Lower Blood Pressure
The mulberry leaf extract was diluted and injected into the femoral vein of the dog after anesthesia, and there was a temporary drop in blood pressure without affecting breathing. The rutin in mulberry leaves also has the effect of reducing blood pressure.
b) Antispasmodic Effect
Quercetin can reduce the tension of intestinal and bronchial smooth muscle. Rutin can reduce the gastric motility function of rats and relieve the spasm of small intestinal smooth muscle caused by barium chloride.
c) Anti-Aging Effect
Mulberry leaf extract can improve the activity of scavenging free radical enzymes and reduce the brown matter in the tissue to delay aging. The superoxide dismutase in the extract can catalyze the disproportionation of superoxide anion free radicals to generate molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, which can scavenge free radicals in time, thereby protecting the body from free radical damage, and in the anti-aging of the human body Plays a very important role.
d) Anti-Inflammatory Effect
Rutin and quercetin can inhibit the edema of the feet and ankles caused by histamine, egg white, formaldehyde, serotonin, and polyvinylpyrrolidone, and the edema of the feet and ankles caused by hyaluronidase in rats. Intravenous injection of rutin can inhibit the skin and joint allergic inflammation and Arthusphenomenon caused by horse serum in rabbits. Its effect may be to protect the capillary wall, make the capillaries compact and inhibit exudation.
e) Antibacterial Effect
In vitro experiments of fresh mulberry leaf decoction showed a strong inhibitory effect on Chemicalbook Coccus aureus, Bacillus diphtheriae, Streptococcus hemolyticus, Bacillus anthracis, etc. It also has a certain inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli, Shigella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Typhoid bacillus. The high-concentration decoction of mulberry leaf (31mg/mL) has anti-leptospira effect in vitro. Mulberry leaf volatile oil also has antibacterial and anti-skin pathogenic fungi.
f) Hypoglycemic Effect
Mulberry leaves have anti-diabetic effects on experimental diabetes in rats caused by alloxan and hyperglycemia in mice caused by adrenaline, glucagon, and insulin resistance. The ecdysterone in mulberry leaves also has the effect of lowering blood sugar and can promote the conversion of glucose into glycogen. Certain amino acids in mulberry leaves can stimulate the secretion of insulin, which can regulate the secretion and release of insulin in the body and reduce the rate of insulin decomposition to lower blood sugar. There are still some inorganic elements that also play a role in the hypoglycemic mechanism.
g) Other Functions
Mulberry leaf ethanol extract (phytoestrogens) fed to mice can slow down the growth rate. Ecdysone can promote cell growth, stimulate dermal cells to divide, produce new epidermis and make insects molt. It can also promote protein synthesis to the human body. Can excitably cycle the uterus of mice. Animal experiments have proved that mulberry leaves have diuretic effects. Still have the effect of anti-thrombosis.

- Dosage of Mulberry Leaf Extract Powder
Since there have been no definitive clinical trials which recommend the optimal dose of 1-DNJ enriched mulberry leaf extract, we have synthesized the most common doses used within the current research. For non-diabetics who want to ensure stable blood-glucose and insulin levels, we suggest a dose of 125mg, three times per day, ideally before meals.
- Mulberry Leaf Extract Powder Application
a) Medicinal development
Mulberry leaf extract has pharmacological effects such as lowering blood sugar, antitumor, antiviral, and antibacterial. Researchers have developed hypoglycemic drugs, antitumor drugs, antiviral drugs, and antibacterial drugs.
b) Animal feed
Mulberry leaf and mulberry leaf powder are used as livestock and poultry feed or additives, with good palatability and high nutritional value. The use of mulberry leaf in foreign countries to feed dairy cows, sheep, broiler chickens, laying hens, rabbits and other animals has achieved good results.
c) Preservative
The active ingredients of mulberry leaves, especially polyphenols, have a strong Chemicalbook inhibitory effect on the growth of most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and some yeasts, and have strong thermal stability and low inhibitory concentration. With a wide range of antibacterial pH, mulberry leaf actives are not only non-toxic and side effects, but also health-care functions, so they can be used as natural preservatives for high-end foods.
d) Beauty Cosmetics
Mulberry leaf active ingredients have anti-oxidation, anti-aging, antibacterial, moisturizing and other effects. Japan, Korea, and the United States have vigorously studied the mulberry leaf active ingredients, especially DNJ, and optimized the mulberry leaf DNJ purification process to prepare high-purity DNJ and used in beauty In the production of cosmetics, DNJ is added to the famous Korean cosmetic “SKINFOOD”.
