AFCONA 5281 is an effective dispersing agent for organic and carbon black pigments. It stabilizes the pigments through steric hindrance and its high solids content makes it suitable for low VOC coatings applications. AFCONA 5281 can be used as the sole dispersant in pigment concentrates or be combined with other high molecular weight dispersants, such as AFCONA 4071 or AFCONA 4701, in order to optimize compatibility and cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, AFCONA 5281 can also be used as a post-addition in systems to achieve improved pigment stability.

Functions: Dispersant, Wetting Agent

End Uses: 2K (2 component) Coating, Solventborne Coating, Solventless & High Solids Coating, Waterborne Coating

Compatible Polymers & Resins: Acrylics, Alkyds, Alkyds (Long Oil), Alkyds (Medium Oil), Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB), Chlorinated Rubbers, Epoxies (EP), Melamines & Melamine Formaldehydes (MF), Nitrocellulose, Polyurethanes (PU), Unsaturated Polyester (UPE)

Features & Benefits

Product Properties

AFCONA – 5281 is an effective dispersing agent for organic and carbon black pigments. It stabilizes pigments through steric hindrance. It’s high solids content also makes it suitable for low VOC coatings applications. Afcona-5281 can be used as the sole dispersant in pigment concentrates or be combined with other high molecular weight dispersants, such as AFCONA – 4071 or AFCONA – 4701, in order to optimize compatibility and cost. Afcona-5281 can also be used as a post add in systems to achieve improved pigment stability. The advantages of AFCONA – 5281 are:

  • Lower grind viscosity.
  • Better compatibility, especially in difficult resin systems such as NC, CAB and others.
  • Compatible with all resin systems.
  • Good pigment stability during storage. AFCONA – 5281 is not designed for high load levels of inorganic pigments and fillers as the mill based viscosity will become high. It can be used for inorganic pigment and fillers if the load level is low in the mill base.

Note: AFCONA – 5281 will become hazy at temperature 5C or below. Heat up to 50°C and mix well before use. This will not influence the quality.

Applications & Uses

Cure Method
Addition and Dosage

Calculation method for the required amount of active ingredient on pigment:

  • TiO2 :2 - 3%
  • Other inorganic pigments :2 - 4%
  • Organic pigments :20 - 40%
  • Carbon blacks :20 - 60%
Incorporation

AFCONA – 5281 should be added prior to the dispersion process.
